Chapter 14

Later...

Jeff POV

So I found out that Nick's parents were divorced. It sounds so mean to say, but I'm glad. I just know I'd be scared around his dad. So I'm glad he lives with his mom.

She's been so nice to me. She let me eat as much as I wanted at dinner. I was so hungry for some reason. Probably because I never eat a lot when I'm nervous, but I feel so comfortable at Nick's. I guess the hunger caught up to me.

"Jeff, come here," Nick called from his doorway.

I followed him out of the house. We sat on his front steps.

"What are we doing?" I asked.

"Looking at the stars. Do you ever do that?"

"No... Dad says I'm not allowed out of the house unless it's for chores."

"Oh... Well I love looking at the stars. It's a really clear night tonight. Perfect for stargazing."

I looked up at the stars above us.

"Why is that one so bright?" I asked, pointing.

"That's the North Star, Jeff."

"Oh..."

I laid my head on his shoulder.

"I'm tired."

"I know. A few more minutes, and then we can go in, ok?"

"You really like the stars, don't you?"

"Yeah. They mean a lot to me."

"Why?"

"Before my dad left, he told me that even though we might not see each other for awhile, and we'll be far apart most of the time, we'll always see the same stars."

I looked up at the stars again.

"I like that," I said, smiling a little.

"Yeah. So if you and I are ever apart, just look at the stars. They're the same stars I'll be seeing."

"And the moon?"

"Yup."

I sighed. I'm exhausted.

"Alright, let's go to bed," Nick said, helping me up.

We went up to his bedroom and crawled into bed together. I fell asleep almost instantly.

The next day...

Nick POV

Jeff was having an off day today. It was weird because he had such a good day yesterday...

I think sometimes he just gets caught up in his emotions.

"Jeff," I said, nudging him a little.

He continued staring down at his dinner. He was acting like he was the only one in the cafeteria, and none of the other students were here.

"Jeff," I said, nudging him a little harder.

"What?"

"You ok?"

"Mhmmm."

"I don't believe you."

"I don't want to talk about it."

I sighed. He's a piece of work sometimes.

"Hey guys. How was your weekend?" Trent asked, sitting down across from us.
