It was time.

We all stood in the clearing that we once stood in five years ago to the day. Each of us shared a look as we all waited for the enemy to come marching in. Ness stood next to me with her arm wrapped around my waist as  played with her hair.

"Renesmee, you need to promise me that as soon as the fight starts that you'll run with Jake and you won't look back, no matter what happens, promise me you'll just keep running."

Ness looked up at me with tears in her dark eyes. I didn't know what was going to happen, or if any of us were going to come out of this alive, but I made a promise to my sister to keep Renesmee safe, even if I had to let her go to do so.

"I promise."

I brushed away the tears that escaped her eyes as she brought me into a hug. I smiled lightly as I hugged her back, never wanting to let go of her. I had raised Ness as my own child in the last five years, she had been the best way for me to cope with the loss of my sister and also helped me to keep my humanity. I don't know what I would have done without her.

We all stood in a group of families, possibly for the last time. Sam, Seth, Colin, Brady, Jared, Paul, Quill, and Jake. Luci, Finn, Kol, Elijah, Rebekah, Freya, Nik, Hayley, Marcel, and Davina. Damon, Stefan, Caroline, Enzo, Bonnie, Tyler, and Katherine. Jane, Athenodora, Sulpicia, and Demetri. Siobhan and Maggie. Tia and Benjamin. Senna and Zafrina. Vladimir and Stefan. Carmen, Eleazar, Tanya, Kate, and Garrett. And finally Esme, Rosalie, Emmett, Alice, Jasper, Renesmee and me.

I took a deep breath, closing my eyes and counting to ten. It had been a way of calming myself down since I was five. I imagined myself far away from here, sitting on a beach with a drink in my hand. I imagined my family just laughing and sharing old stories and finally happy again.

"They're here."

I opened my eyes to see a figure gracefully breaking the tree line, walking slowly into the clearing. For a moment, it looked like it was only her, and I felt my spirits raise in happiness, but then her army broke the tree line and I felt my heart drop into my stomach. She was followed by what could have been hundreds of people dressed in dark clothing with cloaks covering their faces. Just seeing them gave me flashbacks to the battle with the Volturi.

Esther and her army came to a stop about twenty feet away from us. I took a deep breath and pulled Ness close to me as Nik and Elijah stepped forward.

"Mother, back from the dead yet again to kill us."

Nik had a smirk on his face as he addressed his mother. I could sense the tension in the air, it clogged up my throat making it hard for me to breathe.
