Chapter 5: the organ
"Where have you been, Harry?! Lunch was an hour ago, and Ron said you would be there for lunch..." Harry shot Ron an annoyed look, who looked a mixture of concerned, apologetic and sorry for Harry. "... And you promised we'd do our homework after lunch,"
"Technically I didn't..." Harry started to say but Hermione kept talking.
"We have so much work to do and it's more important than ever! It's our N.E.W.T. year and you are both behind on your homework, which you're are doing absolutely nothing about expect moan over having to do so much! If you actually tried doing it instead of complaining you might actually get somewhere! And I've been easy on you, Harry, because of the break-up but it's been three weeks now, you have to at least keep up with your homework!"
At this point most people in common room were looking at Harry getting shouted his head off, concern in some's eyes, mirth in others and fear in quite a few.
"Relax Hermione, shouting that much can't be good for your blood pressure," It seemed like the entire common room sucked in a breath as Hermione's eyes flashed. "I got a bit caught up, I'll go change now and then we can do our homework."
The common room gasped as Harry turned around to walk to the boys' dorms, but before he could take a single step Hermione had taken a hold in the neck of Harry's quidditch robes and yanked him back.
"Oh no, you don't," Hermione said quietly head hanging. "Don't tell me you've been out flying this whole time."
"Well, not the whole time, like I said I got a bit caught up," Harry said looking pointedly at the room full of people.
"Harry, I don't care what you do in your free time; it's none of my business as long as you're happy... It's just, maybe next time could you tell us before running off?" Hermione said looking up at Harry, who was surprised to see tears in her eyes. "I just," Hermione had to swallow as her voice cracked. "I just get so worried... we lost you just a few months ago and I couldn't bear to do that again," Harry was horrified to see a tear slide down Hermione's cheek. "Just, please don't die Harry!" Hermione said as she flung herself into his arms and began sobbing.
Harry hesitantly put his arms around her and signaled to Ron with his head to follow him down to his room, giving the common room a glare as he directed Hermione down the corridor. Had it been another situation Harry might have found their faces funny, but at the moment he was more focused on Hermione.
Ron opened the door to Harry and Blaise's room and Harry sat down on the bed Hermione still clinging to him and sobbing. Ron closed the door, cast a silencing and locking charm before sitting down on the bed next to Hermione, who immediately lunged at him sobbing into his chest instead of Harry's, though still holding on to Harry's hand.
After a few minutes Hermione calmed down, sat up, let go of Harry's hand and wiped her eyes.
"I'm sorry," she said as she took Ron's hand. "I overreacted. I just got so worried, because Ron said you said you would be there for lunch, and then you weren't and I didn't know what to think, so my brain just thought of the worst possible thing and I couldn't bear it, and I shouldn't have taken it out on you and I'm rambling, aren't I?" Hermione trailed off with a watery laugh.
"It's alright, Hermione," Harry said, awkwardly patting her on the shoulder as he went over to his dresser. "I'll just take a quick shower and change into some clean clothes, and then we can go to the library and study."
"Hold up," Ron said before Harry could go into the bathroom. "You didn't tell us why you were late."
"Oh, it was nothing, probably just a prank, nothing to worry about," Harry said hurriedly, pointedly Not Looking at Ron and Hermione, not wanting to worry them.
