Turns out Rey and I'd first date would be two days later attending his parents new years party. He even told them about him and I which was a little bit of a reveler. Now I would be able to attach myself at Rey's hip. Well, No. The twins wouldn't let me do that.
Mom must have been worried that I'd make a bad impression of the family, so she insisted on helping get ready. I tried to push her away, but she consistently tried to fix any little thing wrong. Your shirt has a wrinkle, your lace is longer on that shoe, you have a hair out of place. I had to fake Reagan texting me to come over fast.
I smile when Reagan opens the door, "Toot toot! New year same problems!"
"Fuck if I know," Reagan mutters under her breath so no one can hear her curse.
I laugh and come into a house full of adults wearing dresses and button-up shirts tucked into dress pants. They're all conversing, holding plastic flutes full of some sparkling liquid.
"Damn, I kind of feel like a sore thumb," I whisper to Reagan as we survey the crowd.
"Yeah, uh, sorry. You're the only friend Mom allowed us to invite. Well, maybe you're not just a friend anymore to someone..." I roll my eyes at her sentence trailing off and am reminded of what I'm always looking out for.
My heart peaks at the sight of Rey, holding his own flute and standing stiffly next to Riley as she talks to some man. He looks bored, and emotionless as usual in public. I almost giggle knowing I can get him to smile.
"Well, scoot scoot, you kiss lover boy hello!" Reagan pats my back and leaves to go join her parents in a conversation with a couple.
I rub a nervous finger over my bottom lip and try to sike myself up. He wants me here. He wants me here, right? That's why he -and his sisters- invited me here. Because he likes me. And I like him. God, I really like him.
I pull my shoulders back slightly and nod my head heading towards Rey and the group with him. I smile the more I get closer to him, he still hasn't noticed me. I'm able to sneak behind Riley, and next to him.
When I get to his side, he glances over at me and I see his cheeks twitch with a smile I know he doesn't want to share with the world right now.
"Hi," I whisper, leaning a little further next to him.
"Hi," His whisper is just as quiet.
"I hope I'm not interrupting this conversation. You look so into it," I smile evily at my mocking.
He only gazes quickly at the couple Riley is faking laughing at, his hand brushing against mine, "I'm intrigued. What can I say?"
I bite my lip and make sure my hand skims his too. It's sort of weird hearing Rey joke around. He's usually so stiff and quiet, it's like I'm seeing a whole new Rey that doesn't feel excited enough to share with everyone. I hope someday that changes.
I gasp softly when his fingers bend around mine, encasing them. I look at him, but his sight is back on the couple in front of Riley.
"Well, I guess we should be chatting it up with some of the other people here, since your friend is here," The man glances at me but obviously doesn't see Rey and I's hands, "It's so nice seeing your kids. All grown up, i can't believe you'll be in college this time next year."
Riley waves goodbye to the couple and turns to me with a big smile.
"Hey! You look so fancy, ooh," I chuckle with her, "Well, moms letting us kids have a single drink since none of us are driving anywhere. Obviously, your boyfriend here didn't bother offering to get you a drink."
