Wait a Tick

-Lance-

I'm exhausted, drained, and officially dead on the inside.

"Hey Lance, we got some work to do. Don't dawdle." Keith said and I grunted. I forgot I promised this airhead to make out a love story between his crush and the crush of his crush. Does that make sense? Because to me it doesn't! It's dismissal time so I should be going home right now, but no. This guy insisted to stay. "Y'know Keith, I think it'd be better to just straight up tell him." I said and he glared at me.

He picked up his notebook and showed me a diagram of some sorts. Wait, are we planning to execute his crush's loved one? This looks like a battle strategy! "I don't like being straight." He said and I wheezed. "Figures." I said and he glared at me again, snatching the notebook from my hands. I can't believe I just said that! "You won't understand. If I tell him what's up I might get rejected, you know?" He said and I felt completely bad for him at that moment.

"Well then, who do you think is Shiro's crush?" I asked.

"It might be Allura. She's always with him." He said and I wondered.

Allura sounds like a nice name. It suits a beauty perfectly! "Is Allura that white haired chick who looked like a space goddess?" I asked him and Keith shrugged. "Don't know, don't care. Come on, let's go meet Shiro." He said, and grabbed my hand. He dragged me to the third years' classrooms and he requested for Shiro's presence. Damn, this dude has some kind of strength!

Shiro came out and he was surprised to see me. He smiled as soon as he did. Oh my goodness, he's going to ask who the submitter of the letter is, it's best to go home than be interrogated... "Hey, it's you! Lance, right?" He said and pat my shoulder. "Yeah..." I said, shy. Keith coughed a bit to let us know he was there. Haha, this small kid.

"Shiro, would you mind telling us something?" Keith asked.

"Sure thing, bro!" Shiro said and my jaw dropped.

I'm so freaking confused! "Wait a tick! What do you mean bro?!" I exclaimed and Shiro put his arm around Keith's shoulders. "We're half brothers! Didn't Keith tell you?" Shiro said, proudly and Keith was not making eye contact with me. Well, someone messed up! "We've been friends for forever and you never planned to tell me!" I told him and Keith smirked.

"Don't get your hopes high. We're not friends." He said so bluntly and it was like he stabbed my heart.

"Fair enough, but won't you reconsider...?" I asked him.

Keith sighed and he whisked his hand at me. "Whatever." He said, then turned back to Shiro. The way he smiles at him was different. He really likes him! Dang, this guy's brother complex is on a different level! "Anyway, are you and Allura dating?" Keith asked straightforwardly, I was shocked. Shiro was also dumbfounded but he laughed it off. I also joined in on the laugh, trying to cope up with the weirdness of these two brothers.

"No, no! Allura's just my friend." Shiro said and I widened my eyes.

"Really?!" I exclaimed, but immediately dismissed it.

I might have a girlfriend! Yes! But besides that, I looked at Keith and he showed this painful yet relieved expression on his face and somehow it stung me. He looks so dejected, but it was a happy kind. The kind of expression you have when the person you love most is happy not knowing you have feelings for them.

It hurts.

Keith brushed it off like it was nothing and smiled. "That's good! I thought you were keeping a secret from me. We'll have ramen for dinner." He said and Shiro did a thumbs up. "Sounds great!" He said and then he patted Keith's head. After that, Shiro went back to the classroom and Keith and I were on our way home.

Keith was silent along the way. He never spoke a word and he never looked up on the road. Even though I was walking beside him, he didn't once think to push me aside like he usually does in class. The aloof, dependable, star student everyone aspires to be just isn't himself right now. I wonder if I could do something.

"Hey, you're annoying me right now." I told him.

Keith stopped, but he didn't glance at me. "I'm sorry." He said. I jumped, because that person is not Keith right now! Yep, I'm convinced, that's his evil twin brother! "Keith, is that you or another version of you?" I asked him and I touched his shoulder. He didn't even flinch! I'm so scared! Keith was silent, but he was trembling and sniffing. Wait, is he crying?

I pushed his chin upwards so I can look at him directly. He rejected me and he shoved me away from him. He didn't show his face to me and he never turned my way. It's shocking to see him like this but in my life, I never want to see anyone cry. Even if they're a stranger, even if they're a friend or a rival.

Out of instinct, I walked towards him and hugged him. This person who puts up a front to act like he's strong is someone who needs help. He needs someone to be by his side. And without hesitations, I want to be that person beside him, helping him grow and nurture. I want to be his friend.

"It's okay, cry." I said, and Keith wrapped his arms around me and started bawling his eyes out. It's difficult to love someone forbiddenly. It's hard. That's why Keith needs a friend.

Keith needs me.
