I can only estimate how long I've wandered. They left me for dead, and the thought of their faces when they see me again – alive – motivates me. A hand shades my brow, but I'm too weak to sustain it. My arm drops, and I see him.
I must be delirious. I squint. The Scarecrow has dropped from his post, and he approaches me with stilted steps that cover the distance between us in no time. Straw bulges from his textile maw, and he pulls me into his itchy embrace.
"We'll show 'em," he says. His voice sounds like home.
