For the first time since the 1943 Valens Family Massacre, the children of Valendale were allowed to trick-or-treat. They passed the abandoned hilltop mansion in hurried clusters, giggling to mask their trepidation. Danny – dressed as a dollar-store pirate – was no exception. He and his friend group paused to cast leering glances at the storied clapboard building.

Riiiiip! Jawbreakers, chocolate bars, and lollipops exploded along the leaf-littered sidewalk from a faulty seam in Danny's pillowcase. Pouting, he stooped to collect the spilled bounty before his pals could pounce. As he stood upright, he noticed something...
