"Nat, right?"
A girl walks over to me.
"N-no...it's Matt..." I correct her quietly.
"Oh sorry! I'm really bad at people's names. I was just dropped off yesterday and...I kind of heard my roommates were whispering stuff about you last night...something about you coming from mentally ill parents? I wanted to know if the rumors were true, so I wanted to see you...if it was true. Why are you sitting by yourself? You look lonely..." She starts asking.
I look down, not knowing what to say. She looks so pretty and kind. Why would she be talking to a loser like me?
"Th...those rumors a-are true." I hesitantly say.
"Oh!" Her blue eyes widen. "That's so mean of them! Judging you because of your past. You look so cute. You're pretty nice! If only they'd talk to you a bit more instead of judging your past. Oh! I'm Katherine by the way! Katy for short! Let's be friends then!" She holds out her hand.
I feel heat rising up my cheeks.
Still amazed by the fact that a pretty girl was talking to me, I stared at her hand, processing what was happening.
Before I could even reach out my hand though, she grabs mine and makes it shake her hand."Aaaannd! It's official! We're friends!" Katy happily announces, gaining disgusted stares from the other children around us.
"What is she doing with a loser like him?"
"I dunno, dude. She must be blind!"
"She should hang out with us instead, not him! He's weird!"
"She's new, right? Let's invite her to our table!"
"Ew, no! Him just looking at me makes me wanna throw up!"
My eyes started to get wet.
Katy in front of me gives me a worried look. "Huh? Matt, why are you crying? I didn't grab your hand too tight, did I? Maybe you don't want to be friends with me? If that's the case, let's not be friends if it means you stop crying!"
"No...it's not that...I...I just caught something in my eye..." I said, wiping the tears that were forming.
Katy tilted her head, still a bit concerned.
Though, her radiant smile had came back on her lips....My heart is beating too fast.
I feel like butterflies are fluttering in my stomach.
Her eyes really sparkled bright. Her smile is so...pretty.
I feel like my heart can't take this.
She's too good for me."So, since we're friends, let's get to know more about each other!" Katy makes herself comfortable in her seat, completely oblivious to the other children around her.
My lips tremble, I tried not to show her more of my tears.
She'll think I'm a crybaby.
She'll think I'm weak.
I can't let her see me so weak.
She'll end up not wanting to be my friend.
I can't stand to go through that again.
She's the only friend I have right now.
I have to show her I'm not a baby.
