Silver High

Mare

I hate moving but moving to Silver High is a million times worse than just moving. All the kids there are stuck up asses. They're either the spawns of actors or broadway stars or politicians. Rich people.

I look around my small room, the walls are grey like they have been my entire life. Mom said they were going to paint it but once they'd bought the crib they just couldn't afford to. All my siblings and I shared the same crib. Not at the same time of course but we did. We share everything. A room, the little amount of food that we have, everything. My brother Tramy even tried to share my toothbrush but Shade fixed that problem. I smile at the memory.

"Mare! Let's go! You'll be late" mom yells from downstairs

I sigh and shove my things into my bag.

When I get downstairs there's bacon on the table which means the boys either aren't up yet or have already left. Which means I've missed my ride.

"Is Shade still here?" I ask grabbing the bacon before anyone else can

"Your brothers are all upstairs being a bunch of idiots" dad wheels in from the living room. Yes he wheels. Two months ago there was an accident at the construction site he worked on that put him in a chair with only one leg. We sued them of course and that's the only reason we can afford this stupid school.

"Go on Mare, you shouldn't be late", he throws me the car keys and I smile at him "and don't forget Gisa"

"Are you nervous?"

I look over at my little sister, "no are you?"

She gulps and I feel a rush of surprise, everyone likes her, she has nothing to worry about. Then I think of all the friends she left behind, a problem I never had. Shade said it was smart to keep to myself, it would stop me from getting hurt. I think that's just something he said to make me feel better.

"You shouldn't be nervous Gee, they're gonna love you"

She smiles out the window, a pang of jealousy hits me but I shove it aside. I may not be smart or beautiful like Gisa but... I guess that's it.
