Silver High

Mare

First period was a nightmare. I got lost three times, walking from class to class only to embarrass myself when I got there. When I finally find my class I'm fifteen minutes late.

"I'm so sorry, I got lost" I say quickly

The teacher smiles at me, she has a kind face, "that's fine, we're working in partners right now so why don't you just join Maven over there."

I nod and head towards the back where she pointed. I look to the boy she pointed at, Maven, and take a seat next to him. His eyes almost startle me, they're bluer than anything I've ever seen. Pale and piercing but something about them is also kind.

"Hey, I'm Maven" he smiles at me

"Mare"

We spend the entire class talking about science and how Miss Skonos used to be the best surgeon in the whole country but left to teach.

We say goodbye and I'm glad that I've at least made an acquaintance on my first day.

I find the cafeteria no problem. There's a strong smell of vegetables and chicken leading the trail right to it.

When I open the doors and see Shade I'm surprised to find he's not alone. Of course Shade has made friends. He waves me over and I notice the boy opposite him is staring at me. He probably thinks I'm a freak. I walk over hesitantly, I don't trust these people. Especially the silver haired girl next to him, and to be fair her red haired friend doesn't look particularly friendly either.

"Hi" I say quietly once shade has introduced them all. I take a seat next to Shade.

"So Mare, what grade are you in?" The red haired on (Elane?) asks.

"11th" I say

"My brother's in that class" Cal says quickly

"Oh really? Who's-"

Cal's eyes shift to the door and he waves whoever he sees over. I don't bother turning around, I'll know who it is soon enough. To my surprise Maven takes a seat opposite me.

"Hey!" He smiles at me across the table

I smile back. Cal's eyes shift between us. "You know each other?"

Maven nods "yeah Mare's in my medical sciences class"

"How do you two know each other?" Maven's presence has somehow given me the strength to speak up.

"This is my brother" Maven says hitting Cal on the shoulder.

Of course, I look between them and see the similarities. Maven looks to shade and does the same.

"Ok well Elane and I are gonna go" Evangeline gets up, kisses Cal on the cheek and leaves.

I don't miss Maven's eye roll as she leaves. Neither does Cal and he gets a hard slap on the arm for it.
