Chapter 4

Hermione’s POV

Today is the day we tell Kiely about Fred. I’m a little nervous as I thought I would have more time to prepare myself for her knowing but now my five year old daughter will be told that the man she looked up to for the first five years of her life was merely an uncle and the man she thought of as a ‘fun’ uncle, is her true father.

I’ve known my father since the day I was born and have acknowledged him as my father so I am unsure how Kiely will react.

A part of me wishes we were waiting until she was old enough to acknowledge that Fred was her father and Ron wasn’t. When she was old enough to understand what made the difference.

*Later*

“Kiely, could you come here please?” I call.

She comes into the sitting room where Fred and I are sitting, both feeling and looking very apprehensive.

“Am I in trouble Mummy?” She asks.

I shake my head. “No darling, you’re not in trouble. We just have something to tell you.”

She sits down opposite us.

“Kiely, you see this man here.” I say, pointing to Fred. “Well he’s your Daddy.”

She nods slowly. “My Daddy?” She asks.

I nod.

“Use the picture.” Fred says, handing me a framed photo. “It may help her understand.”

I hold the picture out in front of Kiely and point to each face.

“Grandma. Grandpa. Uncle Bill. Uncle Charlie. Uncle George. Daddy. Uncle Ron.”

“No Mummy! That’s Daddy!” Kiely correct.

“No Kiel. Uncle Ron. And Aunty Ginny.”

She points at Fred’s face on the picture. “Daddy.” She says.

I nod. “Right.”

Then she points at Ron’s face. “Uncle Ron.”

I nod. “Good Kiel.”

I stand up and she immediately grabs hold of my hand and hides behind me.

“What’s wrong Kiel?” I ask.

She shakes her head and runs out of the room.

“Oh . . .” Fred says, looking a little upset. 

“It’s ok. It’s just a lot for her to take in.”

Fred nods, still looking a little sad.

“I’ll go talk to her.” I say.

He nods. “I’m going to help George in the shop.”

I nod.

“Kiely?” I call.

“My room Mummy.” She says.

When we arrived, George offered to share a room with Fred but I said we should all have space and I asked their permission to build two rooms on the back. They both agreed so Kiely and I got our own rooms.

“Kiel, you want to go see Daddy and Uncle George in the shop?” I ask.

She shakes her head.

“Why not?” I ask.

“Daddy scares me.” She whispers.

“But he wants you to like him. Come on. I’ll come with you and you can help Daddy and Uncle George in the shop.”

She nods slowly. “Ok Mummy.”

We walk down to the shop and Kiely runs over to Fred.

“Daddy, can I help?” She asks.

Fred looks over at me and I nod.

“Sure Kiely.” He says.

I smile and Angelina Johnson, George’s girlfriend comes over to me.

“Hey Hermione.” She says.

“Oh hey Ange. I haven’t seen you in forever.” I say.

“I didn’t know she was Fred’s daughter.” She says.

I nod. “Fred didn’t know she was his daughter until yesterday.”

Angelina smiles. “Unplanned?”

I nod.

“It seems like he’s trying though.”

I nod. “I think he is.”

“And what about things between the two of you?” She asks. “Is there ever going to be anything or are you just going to be her parents.”

I shrug. “I don’t know.”

She smiles.

“And how are things between you and George?” I ask.

She blushes. “Good.”

I smile at her. “And exactly what does good mean?”

“We’re engaged.” She says with a smile.

I smile. “Congratulations!”

She nods. “Thank you.”

Although I’m happy for my friend, I can’t help feeling a little upset. I could still be as happy as she is if I hadn’t made a mistake with my daughter.
