More Than Just Friends

Forever

I climbed in the window to my best friends house, Lucas, so we could walk to school together. I saw him fixing his hair in the mirror.

"Hey loser, hurry up, your hair looks fine."

"Gee thanks Maya, you really know how to make your friends feel good. Besides, since when are YOU in a hurry to get to school?"

I thought about that for a second and realized that he was right, so I shrugged my shoulders and headed out to his kitchen to bug Auggie, his little brother.

"Sup Auggie?"

"Oh hey Maya!"

He ran over to me and grabbed my hand to watch tv with him.

I looked over and saw a bag of new clothes,

"You went shopping?"

"yes Lucas picked out this yellow one for me," he said while holding up a yellow shirt. "He told me yellow was your favorite color."

"Really? What else did he say?"

"That you are pretty"

What? Lucas said that about me? But why?

As soon as Auggie said that, Lucas walked out,

"Hey what are you guys talking about?"

"Just what you said about-"

I covered auggies mouth,

"Oh nothing, nothing at all." I said while pulling my best fake smile.

Just then Lucas' parents came out, Cory and Topanga, they're basically like family to me, ever since my dad left, my mom didn't talk much, or even acknowledge me...

Mr. Matthews interrupted my thoughts, "Goodmorning Maya."

"Hey Mr. Matthews."

"You're early today."

"Yup, this school thing? I think I got it down."

"Just promise me that you'll get at least a C on today's test?"

"There's a test today?"

He glared at me.

I quickly stood up grabbing my bag while slowly backing up, "Ha-ha just kidding with you Mr. Matthews." and I scurried out, grabbing Lucas' hand and saying a quick goodbye to Mrs. Matthews on the way.

As soon as I thought we were far enough, I slowed down.

"You know you're gonna have to see him again in class right?" Lucas said laughing at me.

Did I mention he was also our teacher?

I looked at Lucas, then down at our hands which were still intertwined, then back at him.

I let go and gave a fake smile "Don't remind me." he chuckled.

We were close to school when Lucas stopped me,

"Hey Maya?"

"Yeah?"

He looked nervous, did he hear Auggie and I talking?

"Well I just wanted to say, you know that you always have me, right? I mean you've been through a lot, but I'm never leaving you."

He grabbed my hand again, "This? Our friendship? It's forever."

I had no idea where this was coming from but I smiled, and said "Of course."

Then quickly turned my cheek so he wouldn't see me blushing. Why exactly was I blushing?

He let go of my hand and we spent the rest of the walk in silence.

It wasn't too long until we arrived at school and made our way to our lockers. While getting my stuff out, I could feel Lucas looking at me while leaning against the wall. I pretended to not notice him, but I couldn't stop thinking about what Auggie said.

Does he really think I'm pretty? Even if he does, why would I care? I don't like him like that... It would be way too weird especially considering we've known each other basically our whole lives.

And then I looked over and saw Lucas wasn't staring at me anymore,

but at someone else.
