Hunk had been waiting for this day for years. He had heard his siblings talk about Hogwarts, about the sorting, about everything, but he hadn't realized what an amazing experience it would be to finally see the Great Hall for himself, to stand among the other first years as they waited to be sorted.
Lance was wearing secondhand robes but standing tall. His siblings and cousins were all seated at tables before him, most in Gryffindor, with the exception of a Hufflepuff cousin. He was ready for sorting. This was his time to shine.
Keith was standing at the edge of the crowd of excited children. His parents hadn't been there to see him off. His mother had disappeared when he was a baby, and his father had died when he was young. Everyone had heard the story, and he wasn't planning on trying to make friends. Everyone said that he would end up in Slytherin anyway, so it didn't matter.
Pidge was looking around in wonder at all of the magic around her. She was a muggleborn, and she had no idea how science could explain what her eyes were seeing. She had already gotten a wand and a ton of books from Diagon Alley, and her suitcase was bigger on the inside. There were floating candles now to add to the mix, and walls that weren't real and everything was just amazing. She had no idea what was going on, but she was loving it.
Professor McGonagall walked in front of the crowd of 11-year-olds with a stool in hand. On top of this stool was an incredibly old pointy hat. Several of the first-years gasped at the sight of what they knew was the Sorting Hat.
"Quiet everyone!"
The Great Hall went completely silent.
"For those first-years who don't know, the Sorting Ceremony will place you in one of the four Houses: Gryffindor," loud cheering from those in red robes, "Hufflepuff," cheers and claps from those in yellow, "Ravenclaw," claps with a couple cheers and 'woot's from those in blue, "or Slytherin." The table for those in green was dead silent. This was intimidating. It was a power move. They had complete control, and that was awesome.
"But first, the Hat will sing a song."
Hunk bounced up and down and grinned, clapping quietly in front of his chin. Lance gave a little smile and raised his eyebrows at the girl next to him, who just glared. Keith sighed. Pidge raised an eyebrow, trying to nudge her way to the front so she could see.
"Actually, I will be giving you haikus today," boomed the Hat. "So listen well!"
"Gryffindors are the
Bravest and most loyal friends
Reckless though they be."
This haiku brought murmurs from the Gryffindors and snickers from Slytherin.
"The most loyal friends
And the kindest are those from
Caring Hufflepuff."
A few Hufflepuffs puffed their chests out with pride in their House.
"Ravenclaws are the
Wisest and smartest of all
Listen well to them."
There were nods and pointed looks at Gryffindor from the Ravenclaw table.
"And last but not least
Slytherins are ambitious
They'll do what they must."
Grins from Slytherin, glares from some of the other House members. It appeared that the Hat was done, but it uttered one more haiku.
"Troubled times ahead
Turn to the stories again
They will serve you well."
And with this, the Hat was ready to begin sorting.
