The haikus were ominous. The Great Hall seemed a bit on edge, but as was Hogwarts fashion, everything kept going as normal. The Sorting began.
There were several people called before Pidge, so by then she had figured out how the Sorting Hat seemed to work. You sit down on the stool, put the hat on your head, and then it sorts you into one of the four Houses. It was a pretty simple process, actually.
"Holt, Katie!"
It took a second for Pidge to register that that was her, but then she trotted up to the stool. After she clambered onto it, Professor McGonagall put the Hat on her head. It promptly slipped over her eyes, for it was far too big.
"Hmm... where to put you?"
The voice seemed to come from the Hat! Pidge was fascinated.
How do you work?
Pidge thought this as hard as she could, hoping for an answer.
"Magic, child. You have a thirst for knowledge, a trait common in Ravenclaws. However, you also have a drive towards adventure, and the unknown. This could place you in Gryffindor. However, in the end I think the best choice for you is RAVENCLAW!"
The last word was shouted by the mouth on the Hat. There was clapping from the Ravenclaw table, and as Pidge looked down, the lining of her robes changed from black to blue and an eagle patch appeared on her chest. Hopping down from the stool, she made her way over to the Ravenclaw table with a grin on her face.
Hunk was called up next, and as soon as the Hat hit his head he was placed in Hufflepuff, to which he went with a nervous smile.
Lance was called a few people later. He was in the last five to go, one of the other four being Keith. There was something about that boy that made him feel odd, set him on edge. But when his name was called, he forgot all of that.
Lance was almost certain he'd join his big sister in Gryffindor. He was pretty sure that he was brave. He'd never considered going anywhere else, really. But the Hat didn't make an immediate decision.
"You are an interesting case indeed... I see that you want Gryffindor. But you have a drive, a willingness to do what needs to be done too. You make more calculated choices than people think, even if your attitude would imply otherwise. You are very self aware... you doubt yourself. You shouldn't. You are very competitive. Interesting... I think it will have to be-"
Lance squeezed his eyes closed as the Hat shouted its choice. For a moment, what it said didn't even register in his mind.
It was only when he heard gasps from the Gryffindor table and saw the green on his robes that he understood. He had been placed in Slytherin. The House of the snake. He walked over to the Slytherin table with a bowed head.
Keith was the second to last to go. He trudged up to the stool, acutely aware of all of the eyes on him. Carefully, Professor McGonagall placed the Hat on his head.
"Hmm... you are one of the few wizards I've seen who doesn't at all belong in the House that he thinks he does. You have let others try to place you where they think you should go. Trust your instincts. You are brave and loyal, you're there for those who have been there for you. You help yourself when nobody else will help you. Your choices, though rash, are always made based on what you think is right. My good boy, you belong in GRYFFINDOR!"
Keith blinked in shock. The crowd went quiet, with but a wave of whispers around him. In shock, he walked over to the Gryffindor table, meeting every judging eye with his own as he went. If the Hat said he was a Gryffindor, he was going to be a damn Gryffindor!
And with the sorting of the last girl into Hufflepuff, it was time for Dumbledore's speech.
"Welcome, new students of Hogwarts! And welcome back to the old! Usually, we'd do the Hogwarts song at this point, but Professor Flitwick is down with a cold and somebody set the toads loose in the castle. So, straight to announcements, and then it's time to eat!"
Hunk perked up at the mention of food. He had been told of the wonders of a Hogwarts feast, and as soon as he could he planned on getting down to the kitchens to talk to the chefs.
"First announcement is for first-years, though I'm sure several of you older children could do with a reminder: The Forbidden Forest is, as its name implies, forbidden. Do not go there. You will be in a lot of trouble if you're caught.
"Second announcement is that we have taken on a new Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher! Professor Lotor, would you please stand?"
A youngish man with a medium skin tone and long, flowing locks of white hair stood up. He looked intimidating to Hunk, young for white hair to Lance, young to teach for Keith, and slightly off to Pidge, although if you had asked her she wouldn't be able to put her finger on exactly what it was about him that was off. He nodded to the politely clapping crowd of students before taking his seat.
"Third and final announcement is a simple one: Nitwit, blubber, oddment, tweak. Good evening, eat well!"
