3. Theories and Food

There was food on the table! There hadn't been just a moment before, and then there was! Pidge immediately looked under the table for how it could have gotten there, as did another Ravenclaw first year, but everyone else just dug in.

Hunk was in heaven. He tried a little bit of as many things as he could. Pidge tried whatever she had never seen before. Lance was incredibly uncomfortable and only nibbled at things. He felt eyes on him, and his immediate reaction was to try to draw as little attention to himself as he could. Keith ate whatever was close and looked good, seeing as he was being pointedly ignored by the people around him.

There was more food than anyone could have eaten. And that wasn't even counting dessert, which few people had saved room for.

The Ravenclaws were talking about the haikus. Someone had written them down, and now there were copies all around the table. The last one was what was fueling the discussion.

"Which stories could the Hat mean? The Tales of Beedle the Bard?"

"Those are mostly about death. I don't think that could be it."

Pidge had gotten a copy of the haikus, but she didn't know the stories. So, she asked the girl next to her.

"I didn't grow up in a wizarding family. What are the stories that you have here?"

The girl smiled at her. She had to be at least fifteen, by how much taller and more mature she was.

"Ah, Muggleborn. Welcome. Our Common Room actually has a pretty good story collection, I can help you find them if you want. But generally, the main stories are the Tales of Beedle the Bard, the old legends of the Founders of Hogwarts, and the legend of Voltron."

"Voltron!" A nearby boy exclaimed this loudly. "It could be Voltron! The Paladins, reborn!"

This caused a lot of murmuring, and some nods.

"Imagine that. Being a Paladin. Sounds dangerous."

"But powerful. Imagine what we could learn from a Paladin of Voltron," the girl next to Pidge replied. Turning back to Pidge, she held out a hand. "By the way, my name's Iris."

Pidge shook her hand.

"Call me Pidge. What are the Paladins of Voltron?"

"They're five wizards with lion Patronuses, and together they are rumored to have the power to defeat any evil. They existed long, long ago, but legend says that they can be reborn, that the Lions will eventually return to wizardkind once again. Godric Gryffindor was the Red Paladin, or so it is told."

Pidge was fascinated, but at the same time was having trouble keeping up.

"Patronuses? I assume Godric Gryffindor founded the House that has his name?"

"Yes, he did. Sorry, I forget that you don't know these things. A Patronus is somewhat like an animal version of your soul, or maybe your spirit animal. They protect you from Dark forces, especially Dementors. Those suck your soul. By the way."

"Huh."

The Hufflepuffs were discussing their summers and getting to know the new people. Hunk almost immediately got on with the people around him. This was his House, these people would be his family for the year.

He opted away from Quidditch conversations, since riding on broomsticks had always made him sick. As was his wont, he gravitated towards the people talking about food.

"So is it, like, a rule that we can't go into the kitchens, or is it more of a suggestion?"

The speaker was someone who Hunk recognized as another first-year, a girl with bright green hair and a giddy grin.
