Defense Against the Dark Arts was being taught as a mixed-house class, to everyone's surprise. It had been everyone's assumption that since Professor Lotor was new, he would want to deal with smaller classes his first year. Apparently, they had all been wrong.

Lance was curious as to what had happened to the previous Defense Against The Dark Arts professor. He had heard the rumors, of course, about how he had been sent on a secret mission by Dumbledore or run off with the Galra, but he didn't know what he believed.

Pidge was excited to see how to use her wand. A beech wood wand with a unicorn hair core had chosen her, and she had read a bit into some basic spells after receiving her textbooks, but she had decided against trying to cast any of them without someone experienced present. She was also glad to finally have the chance to try to figure out what seemed off about the professor.

Hunk had been intimidated by the sight of Professor Lotor from a distance, and he wasn't looking forwards to meeting him up close. He stuck close to Alex, partially to protect them and partially to feel safer himself.

Keith had learned to defend himself at a younger age than he should've needed to, so he was sure that he would have no issues with this class. He walked among the Gryffindors, ignored by most, observing rather than joining them in conversation.

To their surprise, the classroom had no desks. All of the first-years, confused, stood in groups in the classroom, barren save for a wardrobe and one table. Professor Lotor was nowhere to be seen.

"This seems like a bad teaching practice," Keith heard Hermione comment to Ron. "Not being present when you have so many students waiting."

Pidge backed into a corner to observe. The "off" feeling was stronger here. Just as it spiked, the door swung open once again.

"My apologies, students, for my tardiness. I would take points from my House, if I had one, but alas, I am a professor. Five points to Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin. I promise, today's lesson will make up for your wait."

Lance caught the tactic the professor was using, trying to ingratiate himself to all of them by giving them free points. It was working on the majority of them, and, to be fair, it was a pretty good tactic. As he was watching Professor Lotor walk to the front of the classroom, he noticed the Gryffindor boy (Keith?) from the previous day's Potions class. He slid over to him.

"What do you think of Professor Lotor?" he asked quietly. Keith started.

"Who- oh, it's you. Lance, right? I hadn't really thought about it. He seems a little young for a Hogwarts professor."

"He seems a little young to have gray hair."

"Shhh!" hissed several Ravenclaws. The professor was speaking again.

Hunk had been intimidated by Professor Lotor as he walked into the classroom, but now that he was standing on a table and had given them free points he didn't seem so bad. He almost seemed nice! Almost.

"Now I know that some of you may not have ever used your wands before coming here. That is perfectly alright. Most students learn quickly under my tutelage. This year, we have a goal to work towards, and it is to cast the Patronus spell!"

The room burst into murmurs at this news. That spell is for far more advanced students! They didn't even know a simple shield spell yet!

Pidge frowned. The Patronus spell had been mentioned countless times in the Legend of Voltron. It was how you could tell who was a Paladin! She had a feeling that the professor shared her suspicions about the haiku. What House had he been in as a student?
