How does one usually define life? Is it merely a sequence of events marked by fleeting joy and inevitable sorrow? Deceptive in its promises, heartbreaking in its betrayals, and painful in its lessons?
Perhaps, within the vast spectrum of human experience, one might eventually find an answer.
Philosophers and poets have long grappled with these questions, seeking meaning in the chaos, solace in the uncertainty. Yet, for many, life remains an enigma, a riddle with no clear solution.
This universal quest for understanding, for some semblance of clarity, was what compelled April to keep searching, to keep hoping. This was what she often told herself, a mantra to make sense of the days when everything seemed to fall apart.
But now, as April sat down to contemplate just how much hurt a single day could deliver, she wasn’t so sure anymore. The enormity of today’s pain had shaken her to her core, challenging her previous notions about resilience and endurance.
Even the mere thought of today made her groan in agony. What had gone wrong with everyone around her? The one person she could usually rely on for comfort had chosen this day to lose all her composure. The overwhelming flood of thoughts and emotions was relentless, making it difficult for her to focus.
She took a piece of frozen chocolate cake from the fridge, hoping it might provide some solace. Pacing back and forth in the small kitchen, she tried to analyze and calm the storm raging in her mind. But it was no use; the details of the day remained frustratingly elusive.
April couldn’t remember where it had all started. What had made Lisa so off today? Lisa hadn’t mentioned anything recently that could explain her sudden moodiness.
"Yeah, I know there's so much going on in your life right now, but what about sparing a thought for my miseries once in a while? Like I always do!" Lisa had snapped at her.
"But what did I do?" April had asked, bewildered.
"It's fine! Everything's fine," Lisa had replied curtly.
"But Lisa! At least tell me! Wait!" April had pleaded, but Lisa had walked away.
The emotional turmoil of that moment had prevented April from assessing the situation logically. But now, in retrospect, she realized Lisa had always been there for her, through thick and thin. Lisa was her best friend, after all. There had to be something deeply troubling her because she rarely succumbed to such moods.
The cake was gone, leaving April still hungry and unsatisfied. Twenty minutes had passed, and she hadn’t sorted out a single thing. She needed to recall everything from start to finish.
The morning had started perfectly normal. In fact, April had felt more cheerful than usual. After a week-long holiday, she had been excited to see Eric. Skipping the first lesson, she had gone looking for him instead. He hadn’t been in class, so she had headed to the football field, where he usually hung out.
The field, shrouded in morning fog, had appeared empty except for two figures at the far end of the bleachers. Moving closer, she had seen a couple deeply engrossed in each other. Her heart had pounded with dread, yet she had hoped otherwise. Her heart had sunk upon realization: it was Eric with another girl, clear as day. The shock had hit like a hurricane, shattering her childish emotions and leaving her feeling helpless.
After what had felt like hours of paralyzed seconds, she ran, tears flowing unbidden. The hurt had been overwhelming, and Lisa had been the only person she could think of.
"Where are you?" she had texted frantically.
Running wildly, tears streaming, she searched for Lisa, desperate for comfort. Finally, she found her, sitting on a bench with her back turned.
Without hesitation, she wiped her tears away and spilled the story of Eric's betrayal. Choking on sobs, breathless, she poured out her heart. But Lisa hadn’t looked up. Concerned she hadn’t listened, April gently shook her shoulders.
"Lisaaa?" she called softly.
No response. She cupped Lisa’s face, gently turning it, only to see her quietly sobbing. Shocked, she kneeled down, inquiring what was wrong.
Lisa snapped angrily, "Yeah! I know there's much going on in your life right now, but what about sparing a thought for my miseries once in a while? Like I always do!"
"But what did I do? I'm sorry, I don't remember what made you mad," April said, confused and hurt.
"It's fine! Everything's fine," Lisa replied curtly.
"But Lisa! At least tell me! Wait!" April pleaded, but Lisa stood up and walked away without looking back.
Overwhelmed, April felt the tears flowing again, unending. Miserable and directionless, she returned to her room and cried herself to sleep.
The problem remained unresolved.
Feeling the need for fresh air, she decided to take a walk. She only took her phone and some money for the bus.
The cold streets of Taipei mirrored her loneliness as she wandered aimlessly.
When she reached a TV station, she idly watched the screens, uninterested in the content. But then, something caught her eye. The date flashed on the screens simultaneously, and realization dawned, leaving her mouth agape.
"What the—! Today is November 1st. Oh God, how could I forget? Shit! Shit! Shit! Lisa, I’m coming!" she exclaimed, rushing off in a panic.
