Without much time to think, April grabbed a single white rose from the flower shop. She had money for only one, but that was beside the point. She spent all she had, not knowing how she would get home.
As she ran toward Lisa's house, all she could think about was how Lisa’s anger was justified. Gently holding the half-bloomed bud in her hand, she took the last turn toward Lisa’s house, hoping her sincere apologies would suffice.
Just before reaching Lisa's door, she gathered all the strength she would need. Taking a deep breath, she banged loudly on the door.
"Lisa, open up. It's me."
Silence. She tried again, but still no answer. "Is she even home?" she wondered.
She knew there was nowhere else Lisa would be at this time, and she was likely not opening the door on purpose. So, she decided she wouldn’t knock again and cleared her throat.
As she was about to deliver her speech about not ending their friendship and all the times they had shared, the door opened. Lisa stood there in her pajamas, her hair sticking out in all directions.
Relieved and eager to apologize, April spoke in one breath:
"Lisa, I’m sorry! I know I was ignorant and deserved your anger. You have every right to be upset, to shout, or even give me the silent treatment. But I can't stand it, especially knowing how I made you feel today. I was so caught up in the mess with Eric that I completely forgot what today was. It wasn’t until I saw the date that I realized my mistake. I’m sorry, Lisa. You know I never forget this day, right? I even bought a rose to apologize. You don't have to say anything. I'll just leave it here and go. I don't deserve you. Goodbye, dear friend."
She placed the rose gently on the ground and turned to leave, taking slow steps, hoping Lisa would stop her. It was cold, and she didn’t want to go out into the cold just yet.
She kept hoping and praying for Lisa to call her back as she reached the door. As she turned the doorknob and felt the cold breeze slap her face, she sighed.
Just then, she heard soft giggles and a voice:
"Just come back inside, you drama queen."
April turned around to see Lisa with a full smile and crossed arms. She ran back and hugged her.
Lisa chuckled and said, "It's been five years since they passed away, but you never failed to comfort me this time of year. The one time you forgot, I yelled at you. I'm sorry. It’s no excuse, but I was caught in the moment."
"Yeah, I know I'm great!" April quipped.
They shared a brief moment of silence before bursting into laughter.
After catching up and indulging in some unhealthy snacks, they decided to work on their assignments together. As they were about to start, April had a sudden feeling of déjà vu. She remembered she had somewhere she needed to be.
An uneasy feeling settled in her gut, as if she was forgetting something important. She couldn’t figure it out but felt an urge to leave immediately.
"Uh, Lisa, I think I should head home now."
"Why? What about the assignment? It’s only six o’clock."
"I just remembered something. I need to go. I'll finish the assignment later. We can meet tomorrow if that's okay."
"Yeah, no problem. But call me when you get home."
April waved goodbye and left. Outside, she realized she had no money for the bus fare. She sighed and started walking.
Halfway home, she couldn’t help but admire the purple and beautiful sky. She wanted to sit on a bench and take it all in, but it was too cold. She needed to get home quickly, so she decided to take a shortcut she usually avoided.
Ignoring the eerily empty street, she walked past houses until she saw a kid with black hair and blue shorts on the other side. He was walking with small steps, holding a large pair of shoes in his hands.
As she got closer, she noticed his cute smile holding a pair white sneakers with two black strips that were way too big for him. The sight of the sneakers seemed oddly familiar.
Shaking off the weird feeling, she approached him and gently tapped his shoulder.
"Where are you going, tough guy?" she asked with a smile, only to make him jump and turn around with big, puppy-dog eyes.
"I'm sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you," she said, concerned. His expression softened, and his smile grew.
"You're pretty!" he declared, making April laugh.
"Oh yeah?" she asked playfully. He nodded and giggled.
Before she could ask him anything else, he spoke again.
"He told me you'd come. He also said you'd be pretty," he said, eyes forming crescents.
April was confused. "Who told you I'd come? Do you know me?" He shook his head, still smiling and giggling.
Before she could ask more, he ran off. Dumbfounded, she sat on the empty street, watching him go.
As she snapped back to reality, he had already ran towards her again. Out of breath, he managed to say, "And he also said not to do what he tells you not to."
Too shocked to respond, she watched him run off with the shoes in his hands.
After a minute or two, she checked her watch. "What! It's 6:50. Mom is going to kill me!"
Pushing aside thoughts of a possible stalker, she decided to run home as quickly as possible into the arms of an angry mother.
But who was he talking about?
