I was seriously suffering from jet lag.I'm usually the early bird but yesterday I was super tired that I didn't even go to school.
BEEP.BEEP.
I opened my eyes and rubbed my eyes groggily. There was a knock at the door, probably to check if I'm awake and I stupidly said 'come in' to a teenage boy. That was when I took one look and dived under my covers.
"Aazmi?"
Poor guy didn't know.
"Just leave Peter,I'll explain later...please."
"Are you okay?"
I nodded from under the blankets. Then I realised he couldn't actually see me .But I guess the movement was enough for him and he quickly closed the door.I keep forgetting this isn't my house.I nearly walked out my room yesterday without my hijab but luckily Aunt May noticed me as she was folding away blankets into a cupboard. She knew a lot of things about Islam from my mother and so was able to remind me.
I made my bed and opened the curtain. It was a lovely morning and the view of the street below was amazingly normal.I guess USA or UK there's always going to be that person walking their dog this early in the morning.I opened my suitcase and chose my comfy black jeans and a cotton red frock top with a black striped hijab.I also picked my black high top boots for the season and hurriedly changed in the bathroom.
I was kind of short about 5 foot 5 inches but the heels helped make me look an inch or two taller.I braided my jet black hair which reached mid back and tied it up in a bun to secure it under my scarf. My eyes were a darker brown then most and my skin was also due to my background,a tan colour.
For some reason the window on the landing was ajar and the crisp cold air was fanning into the house.I tried to close it but it wouldn't budge.I glanced at the makeup bag my mum had forced into my bag and sighed, tossing it to the side. The natural look always worked for me.
I grabbed my nearly empty school bag and went down.Lilly was already there with Uncle Ben munching on a slice of toast.I sat down across from her and she nodded at me before continuing eating.
Aunt May passed me a plate of scrambled eggs and then left the kitchen.Peter was sitting staring into his cereal bowl which had a few flakes spinning around with his spoon. He mumbled something and got up to wash his plate.I watched as he turned the tap on.
"How do you close the window? The one upstairs was open slightly and it was awfully cold."
Lilly burst out laughing.Today she decided to go with a sparkly off shoulder top and a denim skirt. The headband was blindingly vibrant and I would have worn sunglasses if it wasn't the middle of winter.Actually it was mid January but winter it was still here.I waited patiently until she could breathe normally.
"Awfully...right it was awfully cold..."
It was a good thing I didn't turn red because that would have triggered more laughter.I noticed how her 'i' sounded different and if nobody told me,I never would have placed the accent since right away it changed back to American.
"The window's not supposed to be open .Anyway we should get to school or we'll be awfully late, come on Parker's waiting."
I sighed and got up,following her out the door. Her impression of my voice was way to exaggerated.I hope this was just teasing and not how I'd spend the rest of my time here.
"I'm sorry for whatever that was that happened in the morning,"Peter said.
"It's fine it's just that I didn't have my hijab on,"I pulled my scarf so he'd know what I meant.
