Chapter 20

Cassidy’s POV

We sat around, relaxing on the wraparound porch of Trinton’s father’s cabin on our last day of vacation. I had already called Alpha Grayson and confirmed that as soon as we graduated high school and were able to find a place for ourselves, Ana and I would be adopting Beth-Anne. He was ecstatic. It was actually quite amusing, considering Alpha Grayson rarely showed any emotion.

Yesterday my father called and said to expect a couple more new students this upcoming year. Apparently they would be fraternal twins, not that I really have any clue what that means. Maybe I should have paid better attention in Biology, but Ana is very distracting, even if she doesn’t mean to be.

I can’t believe we’ll be seniors in two weeks. There’s only one more year of school. Ana said she was looking into online colleges so that she wouldn’t have to leave to go to school. That’s the bad thing about living in our town. There are some towns, that even though they’re small, they still have a little community college. Not ours. So, Ana would either have to go to school away from me, or she would have to go to school online. She chose the latter and I couldn’t be happier. I’m also excited with the degree she wants to get. She’s going to get an Associates in Accounting and Business Management! That’s right! My baby is going to get a degree that will allow her to keep the packs finances in order and, hopefully, keep anyone in the pack from going into debt. After all, that’s what packs are for. They’re meant to be there for you in your times of need as well as times of joy. I’m so lucky to have such an amazingly, wonderful and thoughtful mate.

I sighed and leaned my head onto hers as she snuggled herself deeper into the crook of my arm. I purred contentedly and she looked up at me, raising an eyebrow and giggling. I love the way she laughs, I love her smile. Heck, I love everything about her! Hey! That gives me an idea!

I popped my head up and glanced over at Trinton who was sitting by himself, gazing off at the setting sun. “Hey, Trint? Can I talk to you for a minute?”

He looked over at me, then glanced down to Ana and raised an eyebrow questioningly. She just shrugged and stood up. “Don’t ask me. I haven’t got a clue as to what she’s planning now. I gotta go meet Gerald and Markie for training. I’ll be back in a couple of hours.”

That had been the worst part of this vacation. Every other day, Ana had to leave to meet with Gerald and Mark for training and we weren’t allowed to go with. Apparently it was all very hush, hush. I hate secrets, but Ana said that once she has it all figured out and they can “trust her to be on her own” then she’ll show me everything she’s learned. She says it’s going to knock my socks off, it’s that incredible. My response? “Of course it’s incredible, baby. It’s you that’s doing it.” Yeah, that got an adorable little blush out of her. I smiled to myself just thinking about it.

Someone cleared their throat and I looked up to see Trinton standing over me, a small smile playing on his lips. I raised an eyebrow at him and he let out a full blown smile. “I thought you wanted to talk to me. If I had known you would be sitting there, staring into space, I wouldn’t have bothered staying around for so long.”

I rolled my eyes at him and stood up, punching him in the shoulder as I lead him into the family room. I heard his intake of breath as the sting of my punch sunk in and I couldn’t help but chuckle a little. He’s such a pansy sometimes, I swear. Once we got inside, I sat on the couch facing the fireplace and he took a seat on the arm of the love seat that was pushed away from the fireplace but angled towards the couch I was sitting on.

“So…” He said eyeing me thoughtfully.

“Well…” I started, a slight blush forming on my cheeks. “I need your help with something.”

He just sat there, motioning with his hand for me to continue.

“I want to do something for Ana. Something that will let her know exactly how I feel about her, how my I love her.”

“And?” He drew out the word, prompting me to go on.

“And…” I started slowly before finishing in a quick whisper, “I have no clue what to do.”

“What was that?” I stood from his spot and walked over towards me, kneeling on the floor in front of, forcing me to look into his eyes.

“I said,” I began, trying, and failing, to pull my chin from his hands. “I don’t know what to do to show her. I don’t know where to start.”

He let out a small chuckle and I glared at him. He stood from where he had been kneeling in front of me and pulled something out of his pocket. “I was going to make an exception for you, you know.” I looked at him, the confusion I felt clear on my face. “You were the only female that I would have given anything for a chance to be with, regardless of the fact that I have a mate out there somewhere. I was planning on asking you out the day you told me about you and Ana. It crushed me, but there was nothing I could do about it. A mate is a mate, and a mate trumps all other relationships.”

“What are you getting at here?” I asked, standing up to get a better shot at looking into his eyes, not that that would have been possible with how much he towered over me, but a girl can try.

“I was going to give this to you and ask you to be my girl. Ana came along and took you right out from under my nose, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. She makes you so happy, and that makes me happy. I’m glad that my Beta has found her mate. I’m glad that the bond is there and that you’ll always have someone there to support you, mentally and emotionally. That being said, I want you to have this so that you can give it to her.”

I held out my hand and he dropped a small, blue, velvet box in my hand. I gasped when I opened it. It was beautiful. That white gold band was slender and there was a small sapphire set in the center with smaller diamonds on each side of it. I looked up at Trinton and he had a small blush on his cheeks. I couldn’t stop myself. I threw my arms around him and he chuckled, wrapping his arms around me as well.

“She’s going to love it,” I told him as I pulled away.

“Who’s going to love what?” We jumped apart as if the voice drove a wedge between us. Ana stood in the doorway, arms crossed over her chest and one eyebrow raised, not looking happy in the least. Shoot!”What’s going on here?”

Trinton moved to her, holding his hands up in a defensive manner. “It’s not what it looked like, Ana. I promise, I would never do anything to jeopardize our friendship or your relationship.”

The next thing that happened had me and Trinton staring at each other in complete confusion. She started laughing. “Y-y-you should h-h-have s-s-seen your f-f-f-faces,” she got out between laughs.

What? She wasn’t being serious? Reasons I love my mate. I swear, she is such a feisty little thing. I walked over to her and wrapped my arms around her waist, pulling her into me while slipping the ring into Trinton’s waiting hand and mouthing “Hold on to it for me, please.” He nodded and walked out the room, shoving the ring into his pocket. That was close.
