Sofia remembered meeting Prince Hugo for the first time. Sofia wanted to try out for the flying derby team at the Royal Preparatory Academy—but everyone told her not to because they said it was only for princes. But that didn't stop Sofia from becoming the first princess on the flying derby team at all. But learning to ride a flying horse wasn't easy, and whenever Sofia failed to do so, Hugo would make fun of her—and he made fun of James for helping her. During the tryout race, Hugo cheated by making Sofia fall off her horse, Minimus. But with the help of James, Sofia made it to the flying line and beat Hugo.

Sometime afterwards, Sofia and James were to ride in the flying derby championships for Royal Prep, but James wound up spraining his wrist and couldn't race with Sofia. The only one who could race with Sofia was Hugo, and he really didn't want to do any team plays. But then—thanks to Hugo's flying horse Electra—Sofia learned that Hugo wasn't who everyone thought he was. He was really suffering from the pressure of having to live up to his family's legacy and frustration at always failing to do so. Sofia offered to help Hugo win the Flying Crown for his family, and Hugo accepted her offer. However, learning the true meaning of teamwork wasn't easy, but at the very last minute, the lesson sunk in, and when Hugo and Sofia won the Flying Crown, they became friends.

After that, Sofia and Hugo became best friends—and their friends and family teased them, saying they were boyfriend and girlfriend. However, long after that, when Sofia and Hugo performed in a school play Cinderella and the Beauty Within, they officially became a couple. Of course, their first attempt was ruined by Amber, Hildegard, and Clio, who made up for their actions.

Sofia and Hugo remembered the time they broke up. After Hugo came back from a vacation, he started sneezing and breaking out in a green rash whenever he got near Sofia. They feared that he was allergic to her, so they broke up. A few days later, Hugo learned that Sofia had been using Fleur de Freezenburg bubble bath—and he was really allergic to the aroma. Once Sofia and Hugo found out about this, they got back together. They didn't think anything could break them up ever.

Sofia was in her room, getting ready to go and see Hugo in his palace. Amber and James were going with her—and so was Hildegard. Right now, Sofia was in her room, looking for her shoes. Suddenly, James called, "Sofia, are you ready?"

"I'll be there," Sofia said. She found her shoes and went to the door as she put them on. "Okay, now I'm ready."

"Great, let's go," James smiled.

Sofia and James went to the front of the castle, where Amber and Hildegard were waiting.

"Well, it's about time you got here," Hildegard declared.

"Sorry, Hildy—I couldn't find my shoes," Sofia declared. "Let's get a move on."

Hildegard, Amber, James, and Sofia got into a flying coach, and off they went to Hugo's palace.

At Hugo's palace, he was in the library, writing in a book, and he was having fun. Suddenly, his father, King Garrick, showed up.

"Hey, champ, your friends are here," Garrick told his son.

"Thanks, Dad," Hugo smiled.

James and the girls entered the library.

"Hi, Hugo, how goes it?" Sofia asked.

"Fine, Sofie, thank you," Hugo smiled, taking off his reading glasses.

Suddenly, Hugo's older brother, Axel, came in. Hugo hastily put his book in his bag. Seeing Hugo put his book away like that made Amber and Hildegard suspicious.

"Hey, baby bro, what are you up to?" Axel asked.

"Oh, I was just looking for my glasses," Hugo lied.

"Well, it looks like you've found them," Axel smiled.

"Yes, I did," Hugo smiled back, putting his glasses back in their case.

As soon as Axel was gone, Hugo was relieved.

"What's going on, Hugo?" Sofia asked.

"Well, Axel's birthday is coming up, and I'm working on something special for him," Hugo replied.

But Hildegard and Amber weren't so sure that was true.

"Well, I hope you don't mind me asking, but what is this special something working on?" James asked.

Just as Hugo was explaining to James and Sofia what he was doing, Amber and Hildegard slipped away to have a private conversation.

"He sure put that book away hastily," Hildegard whispered.

"That must be his private diary," Amber assumed. "What do you suppose is in there?"

"Well, he's showing his diary to James and Sofia right now," Hildegard declared.

The two girls heard Sofia giggling. "Wow, I love how you drew these," she giggled.

"Yeah, it's awesome," James smiled.

"Thanks," Hugo smiled. "The book is already full—I just have to color in these drawings."

"You do that," Sofia smiled.

Amber and Hildegard didn't know what those kids were talking about, and they didn't understand why Hugo gave them permission to look in his journal.

"I'm sure he's okay letting Sofia read his diary because she's his girlfriend," Hildegard scoffed.

"But that doesn't explain why James gets to see it," Amber said.

Later, while Sofia and James read books, Hugo colored in his drawings in his book. Amber and Hildegard were curious about what Hugo was doing. They tried to peek over his shoulder only for him to quickly close his book and say, "Perfect—it's all done."

"Great," Sofia smiled.

"Now I just have to figure out how to hide it from Axel—you know we share a room, so it won't be easy," Hugo declared.

"I'm sure you'll figure out how to hide it," James told him. "Anyway, we've been inside for too long—why don't we go outside and play?"

"Great idea," Sofia smiled.

"Sure, just let me take my stuff upstairs," Hugo said.
