After they were finished playing, Hugo put the game back in his and Axel's room. When he left, Amber and Hildegard stayed behind, hoping they could read more in Hugo's journal.
"We have to read more in the journal," Hildegard urged.
Amber found Hugo's book under his bed and read the last chapter. "Oh, no! Listen to this," she gasped.
It has come to my attention that my main Earth contact, Princess Sofia of Enchancia, has stumbled onto my secret and must now be destroyed. I've invited her over to my palace, and I'm going to give her the Olympian Handshake of Death—and then no one will be able to stop us from taking over the world!
"Oh, lord—we have to save her!" Hildegard gasped.
When Amber put the book back where it was, she and Hildegard raced out to find Sofia and Hugo.
"Oh, where are they?" Amber asked desperately.
Amber and Hildegard found Sofia and Hugo outside in the garden. It looked like they were reaching for each other's hands much to Amber and Hildegard's shock.
"No, don't!" Amber shrieked.
Amber and Hildegard pulled Sofia and Hugo apart to keep him from giving her the Olympian Handshake of Death.
"All right, enough already!" Sofia growled.
"What's wrong with you, girls?" Hugo snarled. "Why are you acting so strange?"
"Us, strange? We're not the ones trying to give you and Sofia the Olympian Handshake of Death!" Hildegard glowered.
Suddenly, it was very clear to Sofia and Hugo—now Sofia knew why Amber and Hildegard thought Hugo was an alien.
"Handshake? You think I'm trying to kill Sofia with a handshake?" Hugo frowned.
"Yes, you are, you crazy alien prince!" Amber glared.
"We know all about your evil plan!" Hildegard joined in.
Hugo was confused, but Sofia said, "For some odd reason, they think you're an evil alien."
Then Hugo started laughing hysterically. "You girls think I'm an alien?" he chuckled.
"That's what it says in your diary," Hildegard said.
"Diary? What diary?" Hugo asked.
"The blue book with an alien head on the front," Amber replied.
"Amber, that's not a diary—and it's not a journal either," Sofia frowned. "It's a science fiction novel Hugo has been writing."
Amber and Hildegard were shocked to hear that.
"A novel?" Amber gasped. "But we saw Hugo and his brother spraying air freshener in their room."
"Air freshener?" Hugo frowned. "Oh, the handmaidens ran out of soap to wash our sweaty clothes, so we tried to use air freshener to stop the stench from stinking up our room—but it didn't work."
"But what about that crazy Snakes and Ladders game?" Hildegard asked.
"It was an ordinary game when I first got it, but Uncle Grim put a spell on it to make it more fun," Hugo said.
"Why didn't you say that book was a novel in the first place?" Amber asked.
"He did—weren't you listening?" Sofia chided her.
Amber and Hildegard realized that they didn't really listen to Hugo when he said that his book was really a novel.
"But why do you keep hiding that book anyway?" Hildegard asked.
"I wrote that novel for Axel as a birthday present," Hugo revealed. "I know how much he loves science fiction, so I wrote him a novel to get a giggle out of him. Hiding that book from him isn't easy because we share a room."
Amber and Hildegard felt terrible that they read Hugo's book without permission, then assumed he was an evil alien.
"Wow, we sure jumped to some pretty wild conclusions," Hildegard grinned nervously.
"Yeah, we should've listened when you said it was a novel," Amber sighed.
"Oh, it's okay," Hugo smiled.
Suddenly, Hugo and Axel's uncle Grimtrix came up and beamed, "How's my Hugo doing today?"
Hugo jumped at the sound of his uncle's voice. "Oh, Uncle Grim, I'm fine," he giggled.
"Well, the handmaidens finally got soap to wash your dirty clothes," Grimtrix smiled.
"Oh, thank goodness—spraying that air freshener made that bedroom smell like a springtime meadow invaded by a skunk," Hugo sighed.
Hugo and Axel gathered their sweaty clothes and gave them to the handmaidens. Now the princes' bedroom smelled better without the stinky sweat from their apparel.
Later, Sofia, Amber, and Hildegard climbed into a flying coach and flew off to Enchancia Castle.
"Well, I hope you girls have learned your lessons today," Sofia chided Amber and Hildegard. "Maybe you'll think twice before jumping to conclusions next time, and you should pay more attention in the future."
"Yes, Sofia," Amber and Hildegard smiled nervously.
A few days later, it was Axel's birthday, and even Sofia came to celebrate. Hugo had given Axel the gift he worked hard on. Axel removed the ribbon and paper to find the book Hugo had written.
"It's a science fiction novel I wrote about our family as aliens planning to take over the planet," Hugo told Axel.
Axel opened the book and read it carefully, and Hugo's alien drawings amused him. "Wow, you did a good job at drawing us as aliens," he laughed. He showed his family the alien drawings.
"Wow, those are great drawings," Grimtrix smiled.
"Wouldn't it be funny if we dressed like this for Halloween?" Garrick chuckled.
"That would be awesome," Hugo giggled.
Amber and Hildegard learned a few lessons from this: it wasn't a good idea to jump to conclusions and assume that someone was from another world. They also learned how important it is to listen—otherwise, there would be misunderstandings.
