The morning sun was hesitant to rise, leaving the already gloomy city drenched in darkness. The cold winter air cut through the bundles trying so desperately to keep their wearers warm, cut through the comfy coziness leaving ice cold in its wake. The ground was drenched with rain from the night before, which no one had noticed since they were too soundly asleep in their beds. No one except the restless. The sleepless. The hopeless.

The clouds bunched together in weak clusters, accenting the deep purple sky with white, creating such a beauty that it evoked some sadness, as if the longing for that beauty could never be fulfilled. Cars honked quieter in the busy streets, in silent respect for those who did not want to be disturbed. The wind made its way through every nook and cranny, up the tallest buildings and down the narrowest alleyways. All was normal and glum.

One car ignored the silent beauty of the waking world. It was jet black, seemingly expensive, with a motor loud enough to wake the neighborhood without breaking a sweat. It ignored every red light simply trying to maintain the peace, swerved to avoid every pedestrian struggling to put one foot in front of the other without their morning coffee. It cut right through the cold, unsettling air, making it hostile and fearful, the passengers were able to transmit that terror through the black steel walls.

The sun still was not awake when the black car neared its destination. All the world was still asleep, some waking every block or so to get ready for a treacherous day at work. Alarms were snoozed and blankets were clutched, no one was ready for the day to come. But still today seemed no different from any other, the lines between them being blurred by the labor of the daily grind.

The man in the back of the car grunted softly, he must have been having an unsettling dream. Unlike the rest of the sleeping world, he didn't have a nice bed to curl up in last night. Hell, he hadn't even had dinner. The closest he could get was the back of this car so hellbent on reaching its destination that it must've accrued thousands of dollars in traffic tickets in the mere hour it was on the road. But the man seemed unfazed, he continued to sleep.

Unbothered by the ambitious chauffeur and the bumping and sliding of the contents of the car every time a sharp turn was made. He just kept on sleeping. Even someone who was entirely unaware of who this man was and what he'd been through could tell that this sleep was well needed. So the sleeping world allowed him to join them, for as long as he could possibly bear to stay.

The car slowed to a stop in front of a facility with a large A on the front, but no one got out. The man was still fast asleep in the back seat, too deep in his own mind to acknowledge his surroundings just yet. For him, this was the most tranquil he would be for some time, not having to worry about worries until he opened his eyes. The driver got out, revealing himself to the dim skylight.

The cars' reckless driver was a rather stout man, wearing a suit and tie for the occasion, which seemed to be worn from wear. His eyes were tired, the lines around his face deepened into a resting face of worry and fear. He carefully shut the car door, so as to not make any noise to disturb the sleeping man in the backseat, and softly turned to face the complex. His weary eyes searched the entrance, as if he were waiting for something. He was apprehensive to move, not entirely sure what to do next. He stood like that for some time, still expectantly staring at the front door as the dim sky began to brighten, and the city began to wake.
