So you don't have to go back to Their Salvation, I decided to copy-and-paste 'Saving Monika', the piece that inspired this book, to an extra chapter as a prologue. If you've already read this, feel free to skip it - it won't really matter if you do.
If you haven't read it already, I hope you enjoy!
(PS: It's in present-tense, which the rest of the book is not in. Just a heads-up.)
After we began preparations for the festival, Monika assigned groups and gave ultimately no choice. Yuri, Natsuki, and Sayori are working together: Yuri making decorations, Natsuki baking her fantastic cupcakes, and Sayori simply being around to help them out and keep them from quarreling like I've noticed them doing after joining the club.
Oh, and of course Monika and I are working on pamphlets.
I'd gotten Monika's phone number before we'd adjourned the meeting for the day, assuring Natsuki and Yuri that Sayori would be fine and able to work with them in no time.
It's now the day for the preparations. I'm secretly excited to have some one-on-one time with Monika; though Sayori and I are close and Natsuki and Yuri seem lovely enough, Monika is truly one of my favorite members of the club.
After thinking this treacherous thought, I feel guilty remorse about favoring one more than the other three, and focus on cleaning my room so Monika doesn't think I'm a complete slob.
Finishing my cleaning process, I step back to admire my work: shiny manga arranged by series stacked neatly on my shelf, animes organized by color above the aforementioned manga, and a few various video games.
Looking away from my prided shelves, I kick the wad of dirty laundry and various forgotten homework further under my bed and rush to the bathroom to get some air freshener; while I only detect the faintest scent, I'm sure that Monika is like most girls and can smell even the slightest offending odor.
After spraying the air aggressively until I'm practically choking on the heavy scent, I tuck the air freshener away and make my way to the living area to set out the supplies Monika had asked me to retrieve: pencils, pens, and colorful markers so we could decorate the selected poems and club information printed onto the pamphlets Monika is preparing.
I sit on the sofa, sinking into the cushions until I'm one with the cozy couch. I glance at the clock. It's almost time for Monika's arrival. I would normally expect her to be punctual as a responsible club leader usually is - but lately her piano practice seems to be put first before her punctuality. Which is fine of course - I'm just now unsure if she'll be here in time.
Just before I give up and go back upstairs to wait, I hear three eager knocks resounding on my door. I stand, heart beating. Even though I won't admit it allowed, I'm excited for some one-on-one time with Monika.
I open the door and there she is.
"Hi, Y/N!" she smiles sweetly. Monika's wearing a simple white sundress to match the ribbon in her hair, a lacy trim on the edges of her sleeves and the skirt.
"Hi, Monika," I smile nervously. This is going to be harder than I thought - a beautiful girl and me, alone? "You look.." I struggle for the right word, ".. pretty."
Surprise morphs her features. I want to slap myself.
A beam slides onto her face, cheeks gleaming. "Thank you, Y/N!"
Crisis averted.
We stand awkwardly for a moment before Monika grabs my hand and pulls me through the threshold. "Well, don't just stand there, invite me to sit down!"
