(There were some technical difficulties for the last version of this chapter, so I'm sorry if I've confused you. If you're reading this in the future and none of the paragraphs duplicate, just ignore this message. Thank you to makinae for helping me sort out what the problem was. You're the best!)
There's a few swear words; thank you to all of you who left me support, and the awesome comment thread left by the Holy Knights. Love you all, and I hope you enjoy!
I was awoken by a delicious aroma the next morning, rolling over to glance at the clock. 7:02 on a Monday morning. I sighed with contentment, inhaling more of the wonderful scent, obviously Monika's handiwork. Our school board was kind and mercifully granted us an extra hour on Monday mornings, starting school at 9:15 instead of the typical eight o'clock sharp.
I shifted out of bed, patting my sheets farewell as I made my way downstairs for breakfast.
When I got to the kitchen, I smiled sleepily at Monika's eager figure, cooking and humming a cheerful tune I recognized as the song she'd been practicing through every act in the game she originated from. Monika spun around when she heard me, smiling brightly and offering a steaming plate of omelets and hash browns garnished with cherry tomatoes.
I took it gratefully, returning her beam. "Thanks for making me meals twice in a row, Monika. You really didn't have to."
Monika 'tsked'. "It's my payment for you saving me, silly, and quite honestly the least I can do."
"Still, I'm reluctant to take all of this," I said, gesturing to my pristine plate of wonder. "You've repaid more than enough with last night's supper." I patted my stomach.
Monika giggled. "It isn't all just about me paying you back, Y/N, I want to do this - the look in your eyes when you tried the food I prepared last night made me so happy, Y/N, and I'd be even happier if you'd let me cook for you without all these complaints." She poked my nose in a playfully scolding manner.
"Alright, alright, I guess I have no choice," I sighed, eyeing her suspiciously. No way anyone was this happy to cook for another person, especially me. Then again, Monika was her own sort of special.
I sat at the table, watching Monika finish preparing her breakfast and stacking the pans she'd used in the sink. She sat next to me and we began eating. Once again, Monika had proved herself to be an excellent chef. She was slowly but surely replacing Natsuki as the champion caterer.
After breakfast, I explained my plan of action for Monika's new life. First, we'd start with acknowledging that she existed in the real world in the easiest way - a few social media arrangements and adjustments.
Monika of course already had a Twitter account which she used to connect to 'the real world' back when she was stuck in the game (lilmonix3 - it's canon, go follow her!), but to avoid suspicion we'd need to nail a few more fundamentals. An email, Facebook, and even a Tumblr for the more inquisitive of my classmates.
The next step was to get her artificial records of her grades from her previous life. Lucky for us, Monika was clearly stated to be a straight A student, and I was able to attain fake files from the Internet detailing her medical information for the school nurse.
The second-to-last step in the identification process was Monika's core information: she was eighteen, her birthday was on September 22nd, and her full name. This was the silliest to attain, as we struggled to find a good last name for her.
At one point Monika finally suggested my own last name, laughing at the red that bloomed on my face.
"It's not like we're really married," I muttered, embarrassed as she giggled beside me, a bit rosy herself.
