Sun slipped out from underneath the bush a few heartbeats later and padded over to Skypelt. "What are we doing now?"
"I was thinking battle training," Skypelt said. "And then we can finish with a border patrol."
"Sounds good," Sun said, so they padded out into the leafless forest. "I'm going to show you where we do battle training," Skypelt announced. She led Sun through some trees until they came to an open clearing, trees stretching high in a ing around it.
"Now, since you were a loner, I'm guessing you know how to fight," Skypelt said. Sun nodded wordlessly. "Well, you don't know the Clan ways. Attack me."
Sun blinked and rushed forward, leaping onto Skypelt's back. Skypelt rolled over. Sun went was crushed beneath her weight.
"When you leap on some cat, it's important to make sure you've swept their legs out from underneath them first," Skypelt explained. "And don't forget, if you can't knock out their legs, jump on their backs and whack them in the head, then jump back and attack their tail. It'll make them dizzy and confused.
"Try those on me," Skypelt urged. "In what order?" Sun asked. Skypelt flicked her tail. "Doesn't matter."
Sun nodded and tried to imagine her mentor as Lionscar. The tom was a great fighter, and she knew he would be waiting to trick her. She decided to try the leg sweeping move first, and looked up at Skypelt's head, but then shot forward and crashed into her legs with all her force. Skypelt buckled, and Sun darted back, jumped on her back, and gently hit her with her forepaw. Then she hopped off, allowing Skypelt to get up, and nipped her tail. Skypelt whirled around and snarled, then relaxed. "Sorry, I got a bit carried away there."
Sun nodded, out of breath. They kept fighting until sunset, when Skypelt looked up at the sky. "Oh, we had better get back if we want to do that border patrol!"
They headed back to camp, Sun sweaty and exhausted. Skypelt went right up to Brightsky, who was sitting on the jutting-out rock. "Can we go on a border patrol?"
Brightsky nodded. "Join that one with Greenflower and Whiteswirl."
Skypelt nodded and walked back over to Sun, who was staring longingly at the fresh kill pile. "We can eat when we get back. Right now, we're going to go on a border patrol with Greenflower, and Whiteswirl."
She nodded towards the gray tom from earlier and the black she cat with gray spots who Sun remembered was Cinderpaw's mentor. "Is Cinderpaw coming too?"
"No," Skypelt mewed. "She's had a surprise hunting assessment, and she's still out. Let's go."
They padded over to Greenflower and Whiteswirl. "Are you guys joining?" Greenflower asked. "Yes," Skypelt answered. "Let's go, then," Whiteswirl said. His voice was quiet and deep. "Yes, let's," Greenflower said. "Shouldn't you be watching Cinderpaw's assessment?" Sun asked. Greenflower nodded. "I was. But then I took a break to go on this patrol. It won't take long."
Sun nodded and the patrol continued in silence. "We're going along BreezeClan and HollyClan," was the next thing that was said, by Whiteswirl to Skypelt. Skypelt nodded and dipped her head. They reached the border with HollyClan first, and Sun felt anger burning in her as she looked at the not-quite faded blood that stained the ground still. That was Rainfur's blood. This was where he had died.
Skypelt noticed where Sun was staring and brushed up against her comfortingly. "It's okay. No, it's not okay. But no's not the time for revenge."
Sun nodded tortuously, turned, and marked a tree with scent. She was pleased to smell the scent, because it smelled like CloudClan. Making me smell like one of them.
They continued on after Whiteswirl had finished marking a stone. When they started to see the marshland area of BreezeClan, they sped up. Sun stopped when she heard a vole rustling in some leaves near them. She hissed a little. "Sun? What's-" Skypelt started, but Sun held up her tail and she stopped. Sun dropped into a crouch and, stepping lightly, stalked the vole. She leaped upon it. It let out a shriek as she ended its' life, leaves flying everywhere. Sun trotted back with the vole in her jaws. "Good catch," Greenflower purred admiringly. "Let's mark the border."
They sprayed their scent on the border, which was a line of slender trees and treacherous-looking rocks. "Come on, let's go back. Bring that vole, Sun," Greenflower said. Sun picked up her vole, which she had placed on the ground, and followed after them. She was feeling tired by the time they got back to the Clan. They padded in.
"You can choose omething from the fresh kill pile now," Skypelt told Sun. "Not that vole. Older forest prey, and fish."
Sun nodded and looked through the pile, from which Greenflower and Whiteswirl had already chosen, and selected a squirrel. She carried it over to the flower bush, where Cinderpaw was sitting. "Hi!"
"Hello," said Cinderpaw. "What's up?"
"Nothing," Sun said. She glanced at the Rock Pile and saw Silverstar mounting the big stone heap. "All cats old enough to climb Sky Tree gather here for a Clan meeting!"
"I wonder what this is about?" Cinderpaw murured as they stood up and calmly joined the crowd. "Sun the loner has decided to join the Clan," Silverstar began. "You did?!" Cinderpaw whisper-shouted in Sun's ear. Sun nodded with a huge grin plastered across her face. "Sun, please step forward."
Sun stepped forward. "Warriors of StarClan! I call upon you to look down about this loner. Guide her in her journey to becoming a warrior and becoming truly one of us. Sun, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Sunpaw. May StarClan light your journey in becoming a warrior. Skypelt will continue to be your mentor."
Sun stepped up to Skypelt, who was sitting close to the Rock Pile and wearing a stunned expression. "Sunpaw! Sunpaw! Sunpaw!" The Clan cheered, and Sunpaw felt warmth deep inside of her.
That feeling disappeared as the stars disappeared from the sky and the moon went behind a thick black cloud. A chilling wind ripped through the clearing, and a loud voice yowled, "A pool of sun will glow and light the Clans from within, and the gold, the cinders, and the lightning shall rise as the apple casts a dark glow on the Clans. The sun will die and the apple shall rule all as the Clans are thrust into an unending darkness."
