Shattered

Your parents did well to keep up the illusion of a perfect snow globe.

Well at least your mother did.

Your father was careful when he needed to be, but didn't often care about sheltering you. The only reason he kept some things from you is because he was worried you would spill it to someone outside of the family.

But then you left school.

Your father didn't have a reason to hide anything from you, and his conscience certainly wasn't there to convince him otherwise.

You had started to see more things then. Conversations weren't whispered. Bloody clothes weren't completely clean before whoever was wearing them walked in the house. Guns were barely placed in pockets. Everything smelled vaguely like cigarette smoke.

You wanted to know what was going on. You didn't understand what you had seen or heard.

One day, you decided to ask your mother, who would still cover your eyes and ears to everything she could. All she told you was that your father and his "siblings" were working and that I shouldn't be concerned about it.

That night you heard your parents arguing. Lots of  "She's just a child!" type points from your mother and "She'll have to learn eventually!" style contradictions from your father.

You, being the overly-curious child that you were, had snuck out of your room to hear what they were talking about. Maybe you could get an explanation for the things you had seen.

Unfortunately, you were too late. All you heard was your mother whisper "Please." and your father sigh.

He said no. Nobody, and certainly not your mother, told him what to do.

The snow globe had shattered.

Ever since then, the faraway look in your mother's eyes grew. She didn't smile very much anymore. Or talk, for that matter. She hardly ate and paid one of your younger aunts to cook meals and clean. She stayed in her room and slipped away from the shattered remains of your snow globe and the newly revealed, scary, and confusing world that lived outside of it.

You wished that she had taken you with her.
