Family

He told you everything.

It was nothing you didn't expect, but to hear it being told directly to you was still shocking.

And he certainly didn't sugarcoat anything. Why would he? He told you about everything your family was involved in. Things that were both legitimate and definitely illegal. It ranged from drug trafficking, gambling, and murder to owning a small restaurant chain, bar, and café. You were almost sick.

He told you that he technically only had one brother, your closest uncle, Antonio, that still hadn't come back from a mission he was sent on. You weren't dumb. You knew that all those people couldn't possibly be his siblings, but chills still ran up your spine when you realized you really had no idea who you were calling Tía and Tío*.

* [aunt and uncle in Spanish]

He also told you that, of course, your family wasn't the only one involved in these types of things. There were other families in your area. Both friends and foes. The friends were the ones who came to parties. The foes were the ones who were the sources of screams you occasionally heard from the basement.

You were shook to your core. Your head begun spinning. Your father was a bad man. A very, very, bad man. All those people who were always so loving towards you when your own parents weren't, were criminals.

You didn't know whether you were going to faint or throw up.

Your dad told you not to worry about anything. Nothing major was happening between families. And it wouldn't as long as no one rocked the boat without apologizing.

There was that word again. Family. You asked why it was called that, when not everybody was related. You asked why they weren't called gangs instead.

Your father told you that blood alone will never determine who your true family is.

You realized something then. He was right, which he rarely ever was, in your eyes at least. Blood alone definitely did not determine who your family was, because there was no way this man sitting in front of you was part of your family.

And you didn't want to be part of his.
