Chapter 18

It was Monday morning and everything seemed normal.

As usual I woke up early, took a shower, got dressed and ate breakfast with my family. I also rode to school with Vince.

Everything up until then seemed normal, until I got to school.

I went to my locker and usual, but this morning everything felt different.

For once, Nathan was there on time. And Michael wasn’t there…

“Hey Nate. What’s up?” I asked as I turned the padlock of my locker. I didn’t sound as cheerful as I used to.

“I'm doing good Mace. What about you?” Nathan asked in a low voice. Man he sounded different.

“If you’re trying to act as if nothing happened, you’re not doing a good job!” I chuckled and I caught Nathan smile.

Quickly that gentle smile disappeared. “So are you telling me you like it when I flirt with you?” Nathan asked coming closer to me as if we weren’t close enough already.

I smiled for the first time that morning feeling as if everything was back to normal.

“So why aren’t the girls behind you this morning?” I asked surprised. The hallway did look kind of empty this morning.

“I don’t know. I'm guessing they think I’ll be late and didn’t see me.” Nate shrugged looking around the empty hallways. Seriously, where is everyone?!

Finally, I spotted Vince who came in from outside.

“Dude, what’s going on?” Nathan asked seeing him run towards us.

“Yeah, where is everyone?” I asked surprised. I didn’t even see Malcolm and Victoria this morning.

“Apparently Jessie texted some of the cheerleading squads and asked them to tell everyone to wait for them in the hallway. She said she had a “surprise” for everyone.” Vince rolled his eyes.
