I was cuffed in the backseat of a police car, driving towards my new forever home in the state penitentiary. I honestly didn't care that I was going to prison, I deserved it. I had a good life before this, A paying job, a wonderful family, but I went and fucked it all up. We have just made it out of the city and onto the highway heading towards the prison. I looked up into the rear view mirror to see the cop who was driving me. He was an old fella, balding white hair, with bushy eyebrows, bags and wrinkles under his hazel colored eyes,  with milky white skin to top it all off. The cop looked into the rear view mirror and caught me staring, for some odd reason this caused him to start up a conversation with me.

"Well I reckon you didn't do it, then." He said.

"Why do you say that?" I replied.

"Y'know, I've driven a buncha' fellas down to this prison. Lord knows how many. Usually 'bout this time now I get the 'I didn't do it'."

     "Every time?"

    "EVERY time."

The police radio cut us off from out "lovely" conversation, but the officer just ignored it and continued the conversation. I personally wanted it to end there, but no, he decided to talk drowning out the radio.

"I followed your case a bit, being a Macon boy and all." He continued.

"What do you think?" I said sarcastically.

"I'm just glad I chose law and not order. A big, messy trial like that, even if you was innocent, a lot of what happened can't be undone." He said as a cop car on the other side of the road drove past us, heading towards the city.

Once again the radio interrupted the conversation, causing a brief pause to occur before he decided again to pick up the conversation.

"I got a nephew up in UGA, you teach there long?" He asked me.

"Going on my sixth year." I answered.

"You meet your wife in Athens?"

That hit a nerve, and I believe the cop knew that he was treading onto thin ice, bringing up that question, because of that I decided not to answer.

"You want to know how I see it?" He said trying for some reason to save the conversation.

"Sure." I said not really having a choice.

"Regardless, could be you just married the wrong woman."

I was going to tell him to fuck off, but I decided against it, deep down I knew he was right, but I didn't want to admit it. For the third time, the radio broke the silence, asking for all available dispatches to head towards the city. Then a helicopter flew over us, heading towards the city, along with three more cop cars, they are probably responding to the message.

"I'm driving this man once." The cop said abruptly. "He was the worst one, he wouldn't stop going on about how he didn't do it." He paused. "He was an older fella. Big, soft eyes behind a pair of smart folk glasses, and he's just wailing back there, says it wasn't him. Crying and snot all over, right where you're sitting-" He was cut off by the radio, but instead of the other times, he turned it off. "Then before long he starts kicking the backseat, li-like a fussy baby on an airplane. I tell him he's gotta stop, that's government property, and I'll be forced to zap him. So he stops, and having exhaust all his options, he starts crying out for his mamma. 'Mamma, it's a big mistake! It wasn't me!'" He said finishing his story.
