I didn’t know how to respond to her. I was sure she was about to run out and tell my parents what I had been doing.
“Relax, I won’t tell.” She said. “On one condition.”
“What would that be?”
“Take me with you. I want to see the assassin in work.”
“Fine, I will take you tomorrow night.”
“No, tonight. Tomorrow night is your ball.”
Of course, the ball.
“Fine, but you’ll need to put this on.” I said, handing her my hooded cloak. “You’ll be recognized by the guards, if you don’t.”
She put it on and we climbed on Valerio. He didn’t mind going out again. He again landed outside the kingdom. Katherine and I went through the poverty in the village.
“It seems you’re a wanted man here.” She said, pointing at a poster of me with my hood up. My mouth was seen clearly, but I could only see the tip of my nose and my eyes were hidden by the hood.
“How did you become the assassin?”
“I killed the guards who were trying to take the children.”
“How?”
“With this.” I said, extending my blade.
“You have grandfather’s blade?”
“Not exactly, Dominic made it. He must have found the design in the records like you did.”
“How did you escape the guards?”
“I hid in a pile of hay, until they were gone. I didn’t ask to become the assassin, it came upon me. I only started yesterday and I’m a wanted man.”
She laughed silently until we heard a ruckus from a meeting house.
“What’s that?”
“I don’t know, I haven’t been to this part of town yet.”
We went to where the noises were coming from and went inside. We seemed to have stumbled upon a slave auction.
“Keep your hood up, no matter what happens.” I ordered her.
She pulled her hood closer to her face in order to keep it in the shadows. We pushed to the middle of the crowd and watched. I then noticed that there were children in the back and one of them was the child I gave the coins to the other day. I could not just stand there while she was sold.
“Katherine, get ready to run when I strike.” I said quietly to her.
She nodded in agreement and I exited the slave house and climbed up the wall. I came through a window and walked on a support beam to the roof. I extended both of my blades and waited for the right moment to strike. When the girl came on to the block, I jumped down. Both of my blades went into the back of the auctioneers necks.
“Assassin! Run!” a man’s voice cried out. The house went into a state of panic. Screams and yells came left and right as everyone ran out of the house. I cut the locks to the cages and chains of the people who were captured. I then saw the main auctioneer trying to run, but I chased him down and put my right blade into his throat. Without him, the slave trade would stop.
“Why do you do this?” he asked.
“You make profit by controlling the lives of other people.”
“And why must I die? I was putting them into better lives.”
“So you think they enjoy the beatings and the advances of their masters and mistresses?”
