Face to Phantom Face
'Are you the thing from the mirror?' I asked, glancing at the reflective surface.
'Thing?' the voice chuckled again. 'I'm a person, just like you. I just happen to be dead!'
Well that was okay then! It wasn't like the thought of that sent shivers down my back, and the last word brought back the painful reality of Megan's death like a cold bucket of water thrown over me.
'Would you like to see me?'
I stepped back again and landed peculiarly on my bed.
'Yes,' I lied. In all honesty, I just wanted to turn and run, but I felt that saying no could have led to bad consequences. I had no idea what or who I was dealing with.
There was a pause, 'ask me then, you have to ask if I can show myself to you,' Stefan drawled.
'O, oh,' I stammered. I wanted to stall but I could think of nothing to do. I had to say it... Didn't I? 'Can you show yourself...to me...?'
For a moment, nothing happened then I heard a soft chuckle and his faint silhouette flickered into view, becoming clearer every second.
My heart was in my mouth as the hazy silhouette became as solid as everything else in my room, less than a meter away.
'Here I am,' he stated, gesturing to his tall frame. The first thing I found myself looking at a pair of intense grey eyes, speckled with grey. My gaze lowered to an old-fashioned white shirt which was unbuttoned at the top and then black dress trousers.
It took me a while to realize he knew I couldn't take my eyes off him. I closed my mouth which had fallen open without my knowing it.
He grinned. 'See, I'm not as scary as you thought I'd be, am I?'
A tear eased from my eyes as I shook my head.
For a moment he looked alarmed and took a step forwards.
'Don't cry. I'm not going to hurt you. I promise. I'm just your friendly neighborhood ghost,' he joked. 'I used to live here you see... Many, many years ago...'
I nodded, speechless for a moment, but then my heart calmed down; it was only a dream after all, I couldn't get hurt if it was just a dream.
Stefan sighed melodramatically as he walked leisurely to the window that had blown open earlier. 'What is life like?' he asked.
'P-pardon?' I stuttered, unsure if I'd heard correctly.
He turned back to me and flickered for a moment. 'What is it like to live? I've forgotten... I haven't even,' he cleared his throat and smiled vaguely as he turned his head back to the window, 'I haven't even spoken for so long... Haven't walked this new earth... So, beautiful, and different to what it was...'
