Chapter Three

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

That whole day, all I could think of was, what should I do? In fact I was just thinking that question in science class when the teacher decided to call on me. Leave it to Mr. Price to call on a student when they're least expecting it.

"Excuse me Matt, would you care to tell me the answer?" he asks me, giving that look that teachers give when they know they have you. Usually when this happens, you're supposed to stun them by giving them the right answer. This time though, I didn't have such answer.

"Uhhhh..." I think for a second, looking for a way out. "Forty two?" The class laughs. Either for my sarcastic answer, in which I'll be awarded the title of class clown, or they were laughing at me for not paying attention. 'Oh well, they can think what they want.' I think to myself. I had more important things to think about.

"So to you, the most important theory that Albert Einstein came up with was forty two? Why don't you tell the class what you are thinking about, since it is obviously more important than what I'm telling you will be on the test next week." I swear the guy can read my mind sometimes.

"No no, Mr. Price, please go on with your very intruiging lecture," I said rather boldly, still trying to keep some ammount of control over this situation.

"Well if that's how you want to be, you can report to the office. Take your things along with you." Crap I didn't see this coming at all. But what are they going to do, call home? Ooh I was so scared. Not like my mom would be able to answer, she would be too drunk to even know the phone was ringing. I pack up my stuff, throw my bag over my shoulder, and calmly proceed to walk out the door.

"See ya, everybody! Enjoy Hell without me!" I laugh over my shoulder.

"Finally some time to think..." I look into the office to see Leighton sitting in one of the two chairs by the far wall. She looks up as I walk in, then smiles in my direction. Good thing there's no talking in here or I'd have a total mental breakdown. I sit on the far sideof the only other open chair, which was just inches away from her.

"Matt Klosterman, come into my office please." I hear the school councilor's voice say. I start walking towards the councilor's office and got the sudden urge to look back. Just as I did, Leighton decided to blow me a kiss, leading me to smack my head right into the doorway. I quickly turned beat red and turned into the office.

"So, Matt. I hear you aren't paying attention in class yet again," she says. "what seems to be the problem this time?" The councilor looked really nice, with her long brown hair and blue eyes, and that face that made you want to trust her and tell her everything. Still, I was reluctant. "Oh, nothing." I smoothly reply. No way was I about to tell her that I was daydreaming about a girl. "I'm sure I can concentrate better now, thanks for your time." I start to get up, but she stops me.

"You know, if you ever need someone to just talk to, about anything, I'm always here." She says this while putting her hand gingerly on my arm, smiling. I shake her hand off. "Thanks for the offer, I'll keep that in mind. Bye Ms. Belle."

I walk out of the office to find that Leighton had gone. My shoulders instantly felt lighter for some reason, like that cheesy line saying "a weight was lifted from my shoulders". I went over to a seat and sunk into it. Now I finally had some time to think. Until I bumped into the one person I was dreading to see at the moment, Spencer.

"Dude I heard about what you did in there, that would have been epic to see!" I cringe as he brings this up. I absolutely hate being put in the center of attention, it gives me the creeps all over. I shrug and say, "It wasn't that cool."

"Are you kidding me, bro?" he looks at me incredulously. "That was possibly the biggest moment in science history this year! I am totally going to make sure that goes into the yearbook." I give him my best death glare at that comment.

"You better not," is all I could say. It really wasn't that funny or anything, I was just trying to get out of the scrutinizing sight of the teacher, which completely failed anyway.

"So, where we going tonight?" he asks out of nowhere. I look at him with questioning eyes. He sees my expression and stops. "What?"

"Don't you have that date with Leighton tonight?" I remind him. "Wait, no, let me guess. You forgot again didn't you." I rolled my eyes, for he had indeed forgotten. Wouldn't be the first date he'd forgotten about though. I seem to remember a girl he asked on a date, Lauren I think it was, and he completely crushed her heart. still to this day you could catch her throwing daggers with her eyes to him. Poor girl.

"Hey it's not my fault I just have a bad memory." Uh oh, speaking of bad memories. I completely forgot that Leighton wanted to meet him tonight, the very same night I'm telling Spencer about his date being tonight and pretty much forcing him to go this time. How do I get myself into these messes? Should I just tell him?

"Leighton wants to meet me tonight," I hear myself blurt out. Whoops, well there goes the 'should i tell him' question. He just smiles, which confuses me. Didn't he want to go on his date? "What are you smiling on about?"

"That gives me the perfect excuse to not even go," he says with a smirk. How am I friends with this jerk of a guy? But jerk or not, he still is my best friend. I could never hate him, not really.

"You make me sick," I say honestly, punching him on his arm.

"Gee I love you too," he says, rubbing where I hit him. "That hurt."

"Baby. So you're definitely gonna break off all ties with her?"

"Well, until further notice," he says, with that smirk I know all so well. It's the 'I'm a player and I like it' kind of look, where he really doesn't care what he does, or even who he does. Sometimes he disgusts me.

I get to my class just before the bell rings, punching Spencer one more time before I go in. "Dude get to class, and behave yourself, as impossible as that may sound." I walk into English wishing this day would just be over, but also wishing it would take its time, because let's face it, the thought of being alone with Leighton was scaring me slightly.

After school I show up at the park two blocks away. The old oak tree that was standing in the middle of the huge park brought back many memories, many of which had to do with Spencer. Climbing the limbs like monkeys, pretending it was a pirate ship, looking down on unsuspecting victims, even using the dead branches as swords.

I sit down on the bench that site at the base of the huge tree. I take out my headphones and wait for Leighton to arrive, wondering what surprise is coming with her. Only one way to find out, sit here and wait however long it takes.
