CHAPTER FIVE
A bright light woke me from my sleep early Saturday morning. "Damn," I grumbled. "I forgot to close the blinds again. Well now that I'm awake, might as well get up and get some breakfast." I climb out of bed, yawning. I descend down the stairs, enter the kitchen, open the cupboards to find... nothing. "Of course, today is my lucky day."
"Why's that, son?" I jump what could have easily have been a mile. I wasn't expecting company. this early on Saturday morning. I look at the clock on the microwave and see it promptly flashing the time 1:47. Crap, maybe not as early as I thought. I had forgotten the landlord was coming by today to collect the rent for the month.
"Oh, nothing sir." He gives me a strange look, saying, "Okay, well I'm sure you know why I'm here. Is your mother home?"
"Um, well, she's in her room sleeping actually." I lied. Well, mostly. She was in her room, sleeping, if you count 'passed out heavily drunk' as sleeping. "But if you wait here, I can go get your money."
He nods his head in agreement. "Hurry back."
I rush into Mom's room, ignoring all of the bottles on the floor. "Fu-!" I exclaim, loudly, stepping on a broken bottle's glass shards.
"Is everything alright in there?" I hear the landlord ask from the kitchen.
"Yeah everything's fine!" I yell back in reply, trying to hide the pain from my voice. I grab her wallet out of her purse and hop out of the bottle wastle-land on one foot. Finally outside the danger area, I close the door and continue to limp down the hallway, back toward the kitchen, where the landlord is patiently waiting. I open the wallet and give him the proper ammount of money owed this month. "Thank you very much, I'll just be on my way now."
"Alright then, well bye Mr. Boone." At this point, I am pretty much pushing him out the door. I don't like people coming in and finding out the drinking habits of my mother. Good thing I just cleaned up the kitchen area last night.
"Goodbye Matt, say hello to your mother for me when she wakes up, will you?" I lead him towards the door, assuring him I will tell her he says hello. I go to close the door behind him, about to let out a breath I've been holding in, when none other than Spencer came in sliding between the door and Mr. Boone. Great, more trouble just walked right in the door.
He pipes right up with a smile, "I miss anything?"
"Yeah, you missed Mr. Boone here beat the crap out of the alien that just materialized in our kitchen. It was an epic battle and I'm truly sorry you had to miss it."
His face instantly fell as the words came out of my mouth. "Damn I always happen to miss the good stuff."
He can't have seriously believed me, but apparentlyby the looks of his face, he did. That's Spencer for you, anything that has to do with the super natural is true to him. "Anyway, what's up?"
He shrugs. "Not much, mi amigo. I just happened to get two tickets to the concert tonight, so get your ass upstairs and get dressed for the time of your life!" Waving his hands like a maniac, I notice the tickets in his hands.
"Dude this is epic!" I can feel my face lifting with excitement, we've been waiting for this concert for months. "I'll be th..." Then I remembered. Leighton's party. The special invitation, and how Spencer wasn't invited. How do I get out of this? I can't lie to him, I never have. Just keep it simple. I can do this.
"What's wrong, man?" he asks, looking concerned. "You look like you just saw a ghost. You alright?"
"Oh yeah, I'm totally fine. Um I can't go to the concert tonight sorry too much to do." I say, hurriedly, pushing him out the door. What a great host am I, pushing two people out of my door within five minutes? "Maybe next time, okay? Just, bring someone else this once. Like Haley, you like her right?"
"But..." he didn't get to finish, the door in his face interrupting him.
I finally let out that breath I've been holding in, glad that encounter was over. There's one problem dealt with, now just to get past Mom to go to this party.
