Crunch, crunch, crunch. With every step the grass, frozen solid, would crunch beneath her feet. She could see each deep exhale hang in the frosty air in front of her. Another winter, and everything's the same, she thought.

Thoughts. That's why she was here. She came here to escape her thoughts. She looked up at the cloudy afternoon sky. The sun is there somewhere, she thought, as slow rock music played from her earbuds. She kept her eyes trained on the spot in the clouds behind which the sun hid, still walking. Crunch, crunch, crunch. "If only I could pull you out from hiding," she whispered to herself.

Hiding. She was done with hiding. If she had to wait until someone would finally take the time to finally understand her, so be it. All she knew now that it was time to step out, away from the protection of the clouds, and step into the light. No more darkness. It was time to pull the sun out from hiding.

Despite the cold, she pulled up her sleeves. Nothing could hold her back now. No scars would dictate her future anymore.

Another winter and everything's the same.

Why not change it?

Her heart started to pound in her chest and adrenaline filled her system. She smiled as she turned off her music and tucked her earphones away in her pocket. As she stopped moving, so did the world. Inhale, exhale. She looked up at the sky, at the sun, and then the open road ahead of her. Only one word came to her mind at that very moment: alive. her smile widened. No more hiding. No more darkness.

And she ran.
