ONE

CHAPTER ONE
( ARRIVING )

  THE PACK LEAVE FOR AUSTRALIA. Liam, Nolan, Corey, and Mason agree to continue their education there. Alex thinks that Gabe and Theo should go as well, seeing that they haven't finished there senior year.
  After settling in, Liam, Nolan, Corey, Mason, Gabe, Theo and Alex decide to go eat. The six walk to the Ocean Cafe. They take a seat.
  A blonde girl walks up to them. "Hi my name is Carly. Can I take your order?"
  Alex looks up. "Can I have a mango smoothie?"
  "Same," Theo says.
  "I'd like an iced tea," Nolan tells her.
  "I just want a water," Gabe says.
  Mason and Corey exchange glances. "We'll both have a berry smoothie."
  "I'd like pineapple juice, thank you," Liam says.
  Carly smiles. "Wonderful. Your drinks will be right out." She walks off.
Gabe smirks. "So we're the school squad."
Theo laughs. "And the puppy pack."
Liam rolls his eyes. "Stop calling us that."
Theo smiles. "It's true."
Alex nods. "It is. All of you guys are exuberant puppies."
Liam scoffs.
Carly comes back with their drinks a few minutes later. "Here you go." She walks away.
While the pack talks, Alex's attention is drawn to a blonde boy and girl arguing. She zones into the conversation.
"Erik, leave me alone," the girl says.
"Ondina, please," Erik pushes.
Ondina starts to walk away. Erik grabs her wrist. "Let go of me."
Alex stands and walks over. "Hey asshole let her go."
  He looks at me with anger in his eyes. "Who the hell are you?"
  Alex gets closer to him. "I said let her go."
  "And I asked who the hell are you?" he growls. He tightens his grip on Ondinas wrist.
  Ondina tries to pry his hand off. "Erik, you're hurting me."
  Alex give him a tight smile. "The name's Frost. Now, let her go."
"This doesn't concern you," he hisses. He lets go of Ondina and grabs onto Alex's wrist instead.
"If you still want a hand, I suggest you move it," she threatens.
Theo jumps in. He grabs Alex's shoulders. "Hey Frosty, don't get frosty."
Erik lets go. "Stay out of my way, bitch."
Alex growls quietly. Theo picks it up. "Hey, how about we calm down."
  Erik walks back to Ondina. "Let's go Ondina."
  Ondina shakes her head, the fear in her eyes evident. "I'm not going anywhere with you."
  Alex shakes Theo off with a growl. She walks in front of Ondina, protecting her. "Leave her alone dude. She doesn't want to go with you."
  Erik stalks forward and pushes Alex out of the way. She quickly grabs the back of his shirt and pulls, making him fall backwards.
  "Make one more move and I won't hold back," she growls.
  Erik stands quickly. "Come on then." He pushes her back. "Don't hold back."
  He moves to push her again with his right hand. She grabs his wrist and flips him over. He groans.
  "You get the message yet?" Alex asks.
  He stands up again, only for Alex to punch him square him the face, making his nose bleed. He runs away.
  Alex walks to Ondina. "Are you okay?"
  Ondina nods. "A little shaken, but, I'm fine." She looks at Alex's bloody knuckles. "I should be asking if you're okay."
  Alex follows her gaze. She chuckles. "Oh this. I'm fine. It's not my blood. My name's Alex."
"Ondina."
  A brunette girl and boy run out of the cafe to Ondina. The girl gasps at Alex's bloody knuckles and Ondina's red wrist. "Ondina, what happened?"
  Ondina sighs. "Erik."
  The boy raises an eyebrow. "He's back?" Ondina nods. Alex can smell the fear coming from him.
  Alex looks between the two confused. "What did this Erik guy do? Did he hurt you?" She directs the second question to Ondina.
  Ondina nods. "Yeah. He hurt me."
  "Do you want my number?" Alex asks. "In case you need some help dealing with him." Alex gives her a card.
  The brunette girl raises her eyebrow. "Dealing with him?"
  Theo answers before Alex can. "She means kicking his ass."
  Alex rolls her eyes at her friends antics. "Call me." She walks to Theo.
  "Get it girl," he teases.
  She smacks him upside the head. "Bobo." (Fool) They sit back down.
Nolan looks at her knuckles. "What did that guy do?"
"He wouldn't leave that girl alone," Alex informs. "So," she shrugs, "I punched him."
Gabe high fives her. "Nice."
She finishes her drink. "I think I'm gonna go for a swim." She stands.
"We could come with," Corey volunteers.
Alex shakes her head. "No. I need some time alone. To think about why I can't access my powers."
They nod.
She quickly and quietly dives into the water. Her legs change into a tail as she swims away.
(Her tail)

(Meanwhile)
 
  Ondina decided to go to the moon pool, that being the safest place. She tells Zac to tell Mimmi and Serena to head to the moon pool. She only waits a few minutes before the two swim in.
Mimmi looks at Ondina with worry in her eyes. "It's gonna be okay. You have us to back you up."
Ondina wipes her tears. "Thanks guys."
"We can contact Weilan," Sirena suggests.
Ondina shakes her head. "No, Weilan is busy with the Eastern pod."
"Are you sure?" Mimmi asks.
Ondina nods. "There was this girl that punched Erik. She protected me."
Serena furrows her brows. "What is her name?"
"Alex. She gave me her number." Ondina glances at the two. "There is something strange about her."
Mimmi raises an eyebrow. "How so?"
Ondina shrugs. "I'm not sure." She inhales. "She doesn't seem normal."
"We aren't exactly normal, Ondina," Mimmi says.
Ondina looks at her annoyed. "That's not what I mean."
Serena smirks. "Sure." She nudges Ondina. "Maybe you think she's cute."
Ondina blushes. "I don't."
Mimmi grins. "Sure."
Ondina groans and leaves the moon pool, deciding to leave her friends to their jokes. Much to her dismay they follow her.

(Meanwhile)

Alex smiles as she swims through the reef. She finally feels at peace. She notices purple flower. Arctic sea lavender. She swims closer, picking out some. It is usually found in the North Atlantic. She smiles as she remembers she can make Arctic marshmallow. She just needs to collect some more Arctic sea lavender. She has everything else. That's the thing about practicing magic, you almost always have everything.
Ondina, Mimmi, and Serena swim through the reef when something catches their eye. A black tail with gray tips. They give each other questions and move forward.
It's a mermaid with white hair and a black tail. She turns around and her eyes widen when she sees Ondina. The two stare at each other. The white haired mermaid, which the other too don't know points to the surface to talk. Ondina shakes her head and, instead, points to the opening of the moon pool. They swim in.
Ondina immediately turns to the white haired mermaid, Alex. "You're a mermaid?!"
Alex sucks in a sharp breath. "You're a mermaid?"
Mimmi looks to Ondina. "You know her?"
Ondina turns to Mimmi. "That's Alex-"
Serena cuts her off. "The girl that saved you."
Ondina nods.
Mimmi looks to Alex. "Why is your tail black?"
Alex sighs. "I'll explain another time. My friends will be wondering where I am."
Before she leaves, Mimmi stops her. "Wait. You collected some Arctic sea lavender. Are you making Arctic Marshmallow?"
Alex gives her a small smile and nods. "Yea. It's one of my favorites."
"Are you sure you can't stay a little while longer?" Mimmi asks.
"I guess my friends can wait," Alex admits. She swims to rest next to Mimmi.
"Can you explain why your tail is black?" Mimmi questions softly.
"Because I'm different," Alex answers.
"How so?" Ondina asks.
Alex shrugs. "It's hard to explain, but I really should get going. I can explain another time."
She leaves quickly after that.
