CHAPTER TWO
( EXPLANATION )THE DAYS PASS AS ALEX AVOIDS THE CAFE, CLUELESS ON HOW TO EXPLAIN TO THE MERMAIDS THE WORLD OF THE SUPERNATURAL. She leans forward on the couch.
She doesn't turn when Theo sits next to her. "You thinking about the mermaids again?" Alex nods. "Just tell them."
Alex scoffs and turns to Theo. "Just tell them?" She sits up. "How am I supposed to tell them that there are monsters out there? That there are people out there who want them dead!" She takes a deep breath, looking down. "They are so innocent." She looks back up. "I can not take that away from them. They are only children."
Theo sighs. "They need to know. They may only be children, but so were you."
Alex shakes her head. "I was never a child. I am telum, ignis spiritus morte. We share the mark of ignis spiritus morte." She turns away. "Bringer of death. It's hard to be a child when you don't have a soul."
"I know you lost your soul but-"
Alex laughs spitefully. "Lost?! I didn't lose my soul because I never had one."
"Then how-"
"How did I sell my soul? It wasn't mine to begin with." She turns back to him. "I sucked the soul out of the man who found me. It began to deplete when my powers were coming to light. I had enough to sell, but after a few months in hell, it was gone. That's why I got off the rack. I scared them."
"Who?"
"The demons. No one just loses their soul." She sighs. "And I didn't just lose it. It was gone. I couldn't get it back because it wasn't mine."
"Maybe that's the reason why you don't have full access to your powers, because you don't have a soul."
Alex scoffs. "How the hell am I supposed to get one?" Theo shrugs. "Wonderful plan."
Theo rolls his eyes. "It was an idea."
"Yeah, a shit one."
"Whatever, you still need to talk to the mermaids. You can't avoid them forever."
Alex raises an eyebrow. "Do you want to test me?"
"Their friends go to school with us."
Alex sighs. "I don't want to go alone. Can we bring the puppy pack?"
Theo snorts and nods. "Yeah. They are gonna be so surprised when they find out mermaids are real."
They stand. "And that I am one."• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
The 'puppy pack' walk to the ocean cafe. Alex sees the mermaids and approaches them. The pack follow.
"Hi," Alex says.
Ondina looks to her. "Hi."
Mimmi sits up. "Are you going to explain?"
Alex nods towards Carly, Evie, Zac, Cam, David, and Chris. "Do you friends know about you?"
Sirena nods. "Yes. What about yours?"
Alex smirks. "They know everything," she shrugs, "sorta." She grabs a chair from a separate table and sits. The pack all grab chairs as well. Theo sits next to Zac, intimidating him. "I'm sure you have questions. Fire away."
"Why is your tail a different color?" Mimmi asks.
Gabe's eyes widen. "Tail? Are you shitting me?"
Ondinas eyes widen. "They don't know your a mermaid?"
"Mermaids?!" Mason whisper-shouts.
Theo snorts. "I knew."
Liam rolls his eyes. "Of course you knew. She's your best friend."
Ondina becomes angry. "You said they knew everything."
Alex smirks. "Everything you don't."
"What would your pod say?" Ondina scolds.
Alex laughs. "I don't have a pod. I've never had one."
"You're a land girl," Sirena says.
Alex shakes her head. "No, I'm not."
Zac raises an eyebrow. "Than what are you."
Alex gives them an evil smirk. "There are more creatures than just mermaids out there. Why do you think my friends weren't that surprised?"
Chris' eyes widen in fear. "What kind of creatures?"
"Why don't I introduce you?" Alex asks. "Nolan and Mason are both human. The only humans. Gabe is a vampire, Corey and Theo are chimeras, Liam is a werewolf. They are apart of my pack, albeit, I am not the alpha."
Ondina scoffs. "Vampires and Werewolves don't exist."
"Theo, Liam, Gabe. Why don't you show them?" Alex suggests.
Theo and Liam show there eye while Gabe shows his fangs. The others move away.
Alex smirks. "Told you."
Mimmi takes a deep breath. "You still haven't told us what you are."
Alex sighs. "I'm a piece of stone that was brought to life by gods. I'm immortal and 8,000 years old." They sit in silence. "Look, none of us are gonna kill you. But, I must warn you, there are people who hunt the supernatural. They're called hunters. They want to wipe us all out. That includes you." She stands. "Be careful." She walks away, the rest of the pack following her.
The people left sit in silence.
Chris exhales. "Vampires drink human blood. What's stopping that Gabe kid from killing people?"
Mimmi sighs. "Maybe their alpha."
Zac furrows his brows. "Do you think our mother would know anything about this?"
Mimmi shrugs. "Maybe. We could talk to her."
Ondina nods. "Good idea. You and Zac should talk to Narissa."
The two siblings walk away and dive into the water. They swim a couple miles out to Narissa.
"Mother," Mimmi calls.
Narissa's head comes out of the water. "Yes Mimmi?"
"We have some questions," Zac starts. "About a girl. And other creatures."
Narissa's eyes widen. "What was her name?"
"Alex Frost," Mimmi tells her.
"You must stay away from her," Narissa warns. "She is very dangerous."
Zac raises an eyebrow. "So vampires and werewolves are real?" Narissa nods. Zac takes a deep breath. "She warned us about hunters."
"If hunters are here, we must warn the pod and you must be extremely careful," Narissa says. "The famous Killer Frost may not be an enemy." She swims away.
Zac and Mimmi look at each other with raised eyebrows. "Killer Frost?"
Mimmi takes a deep breath. "I think we have to talk to her again."
Zac nods as they swim back to the cafe.• • • • • • • • •
The next day at school Zac approaches Alex cautiously. "So the hunters."
Alex looks at him. "The hunters."
"Why are they here?"
Alex snorts. "Oh they're not here," she turns her body to face him fully, "not yet anyway."
Zac raises an eyebrow. "What do you mean not yet?"
"The hunters want to wipe out all supernatural creatures. So eventually, they'll be here. The reason I'm here is because I want to access my full power. Somehow, Mako is apart of that." She sighs. "I haven't been here in over a hundred years."
"How is Mako gonna help?"
"Mako is extremely powerful, that's how. But, what led me to coming here is that the main hunter, Monroe, wants my power. If she can somehow get it, it's be better to have my full power to stop her."
Zac nods slowly. "Okay.."
Alex shakes her head and scoffs. "Just let me and my pack deal with it. And be careful of how you dive into the water. If a hunter sees you, they'll shoot you on sight."
She leaves the boy to his thoughts.
