When Catherine's footsteps had become no more that a faint whisper, I rested my head on Zach's shoulder.
He laid his on my forehead. After a long time, he said, "She really should've stayed dead."
I was silent for a moment, studying the rafters above us. There was a security camera, but from what I could tell, no audio. "Any ideas for getting us outta here, buster?"
"Nope, I was really hoping you had one," he sighed. "Have any of that nail polish that cuts through metal? That would help a lot."
"Sorry, nothing." I only had my watch (which, unfortunately, is just an ordinary watch). "You have anything?"
"No, they must have searched us when we were out."
Zach slouched in his chair. "I really shouldn't of ran off like that. I just needed to get it out."
"I've been through that, too," I mumbled. "Sometimes that seems like the best option."
"At least you had more of a reason."
"What? That running away would help me get answers about my father? About my pursuers? Instead, it gave me more questions than answers," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "I've learned that the best way to escape from a problem is to solve it."
Zach's restraints clinked together as he put his arm around my shoulders. Well, tried to. The chains holding us to the chairs were only about a half foot long. He ended up tumbling onto my lap.
I laughed, despite the circumstances.
"Hey, Gallagher Girl, you gonna help me back up?"
I stared into his dark green eyes, barely visible by the moon's light shining through cracks in the roof. "Hmm. That's a hard one. How about no."
I wanted to play with his hair, to pull him in for a quick kiss. Stupid restraints. I tried anyway.
He noticed my left hand that was trying to reach out and touch him. A small smile played on his lips as he looked at the fake ring on my finger. "When we get back home, I'll take you ring shopping if you want. That is, if your mom and Joe don't kill us."
I fingered the links attached to my hand. "If we get back home."
"Survival is an eighty percent positive attitude," Zach chided.
"Yeah, whatever, Zach," I sighed. "I'm one hundred percent sure putting a stupid grin on your face when she comes in tomorrow is going to get us outta here."
"Who knows?" He sat up straight and shrugged. "Maybe the crazy lady would let us go."
"This is Catherine Goode we're talking about. She wouldn't let the two kids who took her down go," I sighed. "She probably has a whole day 'fun' planned for us," I said, moving my fingers like quotation marks. "Catherine is not a force to be reckoned with."
Zach half laughed. "You make her seem like she's from another dimension."
"Hey, with how many times she's escaped death, she might as well be from another planet or something."
"I wouldn't doubt it." He sighed. "I guess we should make an escape plan, then," Zach said. He studied the walls around us. "Seen any passage ways? Any entrances or exits besides the one we came through?"
I shook my head and yawned. "I'm getting tired. We'll talk about this more tomorrow morning." My head rested on Zach's shoulder.
Help me pleas"Goodnight, Gallagher Girl."
I found out what the title of Ally's latest book is!!! Embassy Row: All Fall Down. It comes out on January 27, 2015 (at least on iBooks). I am so excited!
*loud sigh* School starts on Wednesday for me. I will keep updating, hopefully faster. It's just that these most recent chapters are the hardest to write. I'll probably get even more ideas. I came up with the idea of this fanfic in math! I half zone out thinking about books (not my textbooks) but still get mostly A's. I don't get how that even works for me.
I'm babbling. Anyway, sorry this chapter is so short. I tried to make it longer, but not much happened in this one.
