"Ya know, Catherine," Zach joked as she stepped through the door the next morning, "it would really help if you would release us. We have a rogue asset we need to catch."
Catherine gave him a small smile, like a mother whose child just told her he was Superman. "I know. I set that up."
Zach's teasing smile faded from his face. "So it was you along? Does anyone else know this?" He scowled and muttered under his breath, "If my father knows about this, he's dead."
"Oh, no," she smirked, wrapping a curl around a finger. "Edward doesn't know. No one does. I just wanted to see you. Maybe kill you while I'm at it."
I leaned forward in my chair as far as I could and lowered my voice to a growl. I couldn't help but give her the response she wanted. "Seriously, Catherine. Why. Are. We. Here?"
She picked at her spilt ends. "I already told you last night. You're a Gallagher Girl. Remember."
My face flushed red with anger and my fists pulled against their restraints. "Don't bring the sisterhood into this! I remember! You're-"
"Cam."
My outburst was cut short by Zach's calm voice. "Just settle down. She has the upper hand on us. There's nothing we can do about it."
"That's right, Cammie." Her eyes were mixed with authority and peace."
Those eyes. I hate them.
"I have control over what happens to you. I can kill you whenever I want. And believe me, I will make it painful," Catherine finished.
I took a deep breath to calm myself. "Can I go to the bathroom?"
Catherine thought about it for a moment and nodded. She made eye contacted with two guards and jerked her head at me. "Go," she said. "Don't take longer than three minutes."
She unlocked my chains and the two guards grabbed my arms and gruffly led me out of the room and into a short hallway.
My mission really wasn't to change the goldfish's water. Although I kinda did have to go. I studied the route we were taking, looking for exits of any kind.
As we took a left and then a right with only about seven steps in between, I realized Catherine had transformed the open warehouse into a maze of hallways, dead ends included.
Smart.
After a few more sharp turns, I was locked in a tiny room and told to 'make it quick.' The room (or should I say broom closet) had a toilet, a sink with no mirror, and a small window that was cracked open with three inch bars going across.
As I washed my hands, I saw a small paper fall threw the window. I wiped my hands on my jeans and unfolded the note printed on Evapopaper.
Be ready at 2300.
-Duchess
I stuffed the note in my mouth (mint chip, incase you were wondering) and was escorted back to our room.
Catherine had left and the guard resumed his position outside the door.
"Be ready at eleven," I whispered to Zach.
He gave me a questioning look.
I smiled. "We're getting out of here."
So I just finished reading Allegiant and I feel like killing all of my characters... Is that a milestone in a young writer's life?
