"What's so funny?"
Ava looked up at Tom, trying to stifle the dumb smile that was threatening to take over her face.
"What?" she asked, although she knew what he'd asked and was trying to stall him while she thought of an excuse.
"What's so funny?"
"Nothing."
"Who are you talking to?" Hanna asked from beside him, both of them looking at her questioningly.
Ava wasn't the most popular, and she didn't really have anyone else to text besides the two people stood next to her.
"Nobod- hey!" She shouted, pouting as Tom snatched her phone from her hand and held it away from her.
His eyebrows furrowed as he read over the screen.
"Ashton? Who's-" his eyes widened in realisation and he looked back at Ava, his mouth open, "Ashton Irwin!?"
"No, Ashton Kutcher," Ava replied sarcastically, rolling her eyes. She tried to reach back for her phone but Tom held it in the air - he was at least 6 foot tall, and Ava felt like a dwarf next to him.
"Why are you texting Ashton Irwin?" Hanna scrunched her nose up, and Ava tried not to act offended.
"Dunno," she shrugged. They'd actually been texting non-stop since Luke's party last Saturday, and their conversation about bands they both liked somehow turned into pick-up lines. "He's funny."
"If you sleep with him, I'll kill you," Hanna threatened, giving a look which Ava presumed was meant to be intimidating.
Hanna was the founding member of the 'I Hate Ashton Irwin' club, apparently.
"I'm not going to sleep with him," Ava said, annoyed that her friends were making such a big deal about it.
So what if she wanted to text a boy? That doesn't mean she's going to instantly drop her pants for him (unless it was Dylan O'Brien, because that's someone she would instantly drop her pants for. Who cares about morals and all that bullshit if it's Dylan O'Brien?).
"If he tries to make a move on you, I'll batter him," Tom piped up, taking a drink from the bottle of beer in his hand. "I mean it, Ava."
"He's not going to make a move on me," Ava reassured, snatching her phone back and typing a reply. "We're just friends."
"Friends who send dirty pick up lines to each other?" Tom asked with a smirk, and Ava narrowed her eyes at him.
"Just friends."
"Speak of the devil," Hanna muttered, and Ava turned around to see Ashton climbing over the fence with his friends.
There was an unofficial party happening at the rocks by the beach, the same as it did every year - no-one really organised it, it just happened. The area they were in was prohibited, but no locals really cared if they were there; the summer beach party had become a bit of a tradition for Ridgemount High Schoolers, and it was rumoured to have started over 30 years ago.
