"We've got officers sweeping the neighborhood, in case anybody saw anything."

It was around midday, and I had been dragged out to yet another deviant investigation, about an AX400 that had apparent attacked a man. The man was some grubby dude who looked as if he couldn't take care of himself, but other than his averagely sloppy looks, there was a big fat injury on his head.

Nothing fatal of course, because that would end up with the guy being in a hospital bed right now, but enough to make you cringe with discomfort at the sight.
Beside me, Hank lazily nodded, "Okay, well let me know if they turn anything up." He sighed. Beside him, the old man glanced over at Connor, who stood in a somewhat isolated spot as he scanned his surroundings.
"What're you going to do with that?" He asked.

"I have no idea." Hank trailed off, in which I indulged the urge to scold him.
"I get he's a robot, but do you really need to call him a plastic asshole? He's doing his job and he's doing a good job at it." I defended, earning a small, questioning glance from Connor.

"..."

No response.

Fighting the urge to sigh, I turned away and walked over to Connor. The swoopy haired android looked up at me, and began to speak.
"It took the first bus that came along.. and stayed at the end of the line." He observed, "It's decision wasn't planned, it was driven by fear."

I tilted my head with a newfound confusion, "But.. Do androids even feel fear?" I asked, recalling that androids had always been, well androids, and like your average robot, machines don't feel emotion. Though with the most recent turns of events, it was becoming a confusing topic to wrap my head around.

"Androids themselves don't, but deviants do. They get overwhelmed by their emotions, and make irrational decisions." Connor explained, clearing up the confusion that worked around through my thoughts. Beside me, Hank had walked up to join us, holding the base summary of the investigation.

The aging man gave Connor a disdainful look, though it was ignored by the handsome android.

"That doesn't exactly tell us where it went." He snorted, facing the opposite direction. Connor ignored Hank's snarky remarks, and instead scanned around the area, only to have his soft brown gaze halt as he looked at the abandoned house across the street.

"It didn't have a plan... Maybe it didn't go far.."

Hank glanced over his shoulder, sharing the same intrigued look that was also present on my face. With a grin, I gave Connor a thumbs up, which apparently prompted the swoopy haired android to give me a smile as a response. A blush crept onto my face, which I quickly hid beneath my hands. Connor tilted his head, confused by my behavior,

"Your body temperature has become unusually high, do you have a fever?" Connor murmured, pressing the back of his hand onto my forehead. Yelping, I stumbled back a little.

"As I expected, you are a bit hot.. Would you like to head home? Hank and I can handle the situation here." Connor offered, but I only shook my head. Normally, Hank would've pressured me to go home, but Connor simply shrugged.

"Very well, but please do tell me if you feel queasy. It would be a shame if one of my partners were sick."

"Connor! Y/n! Over here! I found something!" Hank cried out, beckoning us two to follow him. When we reached it, we too noticed what Hank wanted to show us.

The wired fence that had circled around the abandoned house was hacked away at a small portion of the bottom, enough for a slim young adult to fit through.
"There's blue blood on the fence.." Connor observed, slipping through the hole in the fence. Though, when I tried to follow him, Hank pulled me backwards. I opened my mouth to protest, but there was a sort of desperate look in his eyes, which opted me to stay.

So instead, we just sat and awaited Connor's return.

"RUN KARA!"

Suddenly, a loud commotion was heard from inside the house, prompting Hank and I to give each other concerned looks. Immediately, I slid under the fence, and tore through any shrubs or things in the way, rushing into the house, Hank following.

"Connor! What's going on?!" I shouted, flinching as I caught sight of Connor sprawled across the floor. Hurriedly, Connor pulled himself up to his feet, his expression rushed and dazed.

"It's here! Call it in!" He shouted to Hank, who had entered just moments after me. Surprisingly, Hank obeyed, sprinting out the door as quickly as his aging legs could carry him.

Me? I followed Connor.

With me running just behind the handsome android, we swept through the house, ignoring any junk that was littered across the floor, only focusing on chasing after the deviant. When we reached the outside of the fence, Connor immediately questioned a cop on which direction the deviant had taken off to.

Knowing the urgency of the situation, the cop pointed in its direction. With a rushed smile, I thanked him, and then bolted after Connor.

"There she is! She's with a little girl!" I cried out as we neared the fence. By now, swear was dripping down my face, and my sides groaned with pain, my legs were tired, and I was out of breath. In pain, I slowed my pace, and watched as Connor made a mad dash for the deviant.

The swoopy haired android clung onto the fence, and for a moment, the deviant and Connor locked eyes, enough time for me to catch up.

The deviant had a blonde pixie cut, which perfectly framed her complexion. Her sparkly eyes were a soft dull blue. Beside her was a child with smooth brown hair fixated into a high ponytail, and they almost looked like mother and daughter.

Beside us, a police officer yanked out his gun, aiming it at the deviant, who grabbed the tender hand of the girl and began to dash towards the street.
"Don't shoot! We need it alive!" Connor shouted, halting the officer, who lowered his gun.

"Oh fuck! That's insane!" Hank commented as he caught sight of the deviant and little girl eyeing the road.
"They can't possibly be considering going across the highway! They'll get hit!" I exclaimed, clutching onto the face and beginning to climb.

It wasn't just about apprehending the deviant now, I needed to save their lives. Letting a little girl die of such an alarming, painful death would be against everything I think of as a member of the police.

A hand grabbed onto my shoe, pulling me down and engulfing me into a firm hug. Their arms kept me tucked into their torso, and though they held me in their arms quite securely.

"Let me go!" I shrieked, fighting whoever had grabbed me, only to be surprised to recognize the soft, gray and blue fabric of Connor's tuxedo. My breath hitched, and I felt my face begin to heat up with embarrassment.

"U-Uh..." I stammered, still in Connor's arms, though my struggling had ceased. Eventually, Connor let go, enough for me to get one last glimpse of the deviant and the child, who had successfully escaped across the road..

As for Connor, he looked downwards, a look on his face.

I could've sworn it was a look of defeat.

"You made the right choice." Hank said, patting both Connor and I's backs before plodding away. He didn't seem to really care about the deviant, probably even the case for that matter.

Though, I had to admit, though he nagged a lot, and shouted, you could tell one thing...

Through all that harshness, he was really just a broken man in need of comfort.
