"What a mess."

I sighed, resting my chin on my hand. The sky was swollen with blazing sunlight, which was a pain on my eyes, seeing as they hadn't seen the light of day for a significant amount of time. Stretched across the sky was a gloomy gray expanse, and the world as you'd known it was completely bland.

Well, had it not been for the android Connor, who absentmindedly stood at the outskirts of my house. His brown eyes were fixated on something unknown. He was miles away from the cushioned chairs on my front porch. From afar, I could just barely make out each curve that was chiseled into his android face, and each glitter of curiosity that occasionally manifested in his chocolate eyes. His mannerisms were highly similar to that of a puppy. It was almost adorable.

But as quickly as those strange observations crept into my thoughts, they were seared away with the newfound arrival of Hank's car. It was easy to recognize the gloomy dark gray of his car, along with the coat of dirt that was chipping away at the rim of it. In the window, Hank's face was as grumpy and unamused as ever, holding not even a flicker of positive emotion.
Connor seemed to notice it as well. Immediately, the android approached the vehicle in long, dignified strides, making my reluctant plodding look much more unpleasant than it really was. Even at that point though, it was hard not to be in awe at Connor, as well as his very human-like appearance. Sure, there was that light blue LED always illuminating the side of his forehead, but that was hardly enough to differentiate him from actual people.

Holding that thought, I slid into the front seat beside Hank. The old man tried to give me a small smile to express his mandatory love for me, but it came out ragged and frightening. Somehow though, it was the gesture that lightened up my mood ever so slightly. With pursed lips, I fixated my e/c orbs on the road.

Connor was completely silent in the backseat. Thanks to the front mirror, it became obvious that the android was sitting with his back straight upwards and hand folded in his lap. A seatbelt was strapped around his torso, reminding me that I hadn't fastened myself into mine yet.

Connor seemed to notice this, because he quickly stated, "Y/n, you should put your seatbelt on. It is crucial to whether or not you may survive a minor or major car crash."

Was he... concerned?

There was a tone in his voice that made the overall manner of his words seem less like they were oriented for regular human reminders, and more like they were said out of concern for my individual well-being. I'd be lying if I said it wasn't touching.

But it was quite creepy too. Androids weren't supposed to have emotions after all. Plagued by that ominous fear in my mind, I nodded in reply to Connor's suggestion and put on my seatbelt accordingly. Then, facing the road once more, I crossed my arms.

"I've been thinking about that android way too much recently. It's weird.." I murmured, but my comment wasn't directed towards anybody. At least it was in a hushed enough tone that Connor wouldn't hear from the back seat, though it was unlikely that it would bother him in the slightest. I didn't expect for Hank to reply with a troubled grunt of agreement. Connor glanced up at the front seat, as seen in the car mirror. His eyes once again held that puppy-like curiosity from before.

It felt like a rock was stuck in my throat. Like even though they were cute, they harbored great sadness too. And yet, there Connor was with no trace of that sadness.

"Wh-" I began my sentence as barely more of a whisper, but before anything could leave my mouth, a blur of white engulfed my vision. Inside my chest, my heart began to beat so violently that I thought it would rip out of my chest and fall onto the floor in a gushing puddle of blood.
