...you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
Hebrews 12:22-24 NIV*
Hi guys, as promised I'm updating my first chapter about the topic Zion. It's something that has been on my mind for a long time and wanted to share with you because its truly important in the life of a Christian to fully grasp what ZION is. I pray that the holy spirit opens your eyes and your heart to receive the riches of this message.
Maybe you have heard this word before, read it in the bible, talked about it at church, but today God wants to reveal it to you in deep.
If you have any questions after reading this don't hesitate in consulting me.
So, let's start!
*
First let's talk about where does that word come from.
The word Zion comes from the name of the mount that the Jebusites controlled for a long time. The Jebusites were people that descended from Canaan and, before that, from Ham, Noah's son. The son that was cursed.
When Noah awoke from his wine and found out what his youngest son had done to him, he said, "Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers."
Genesis 9:24-25 NIVWhen Israel entered the promised land they could not dislodge them. So the Jebusites lived among them in Jebus a city surrounded by a fortress:
The Benjamites, however, did not drive out the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem; to this day the Jebusites live there with the Benjamites.
Judges 1:21 NIVThe Mount Zion stayed under the Jebusites for more than 400 years.
But that was not what God wanted.
It took almost 450 years and a man whose heart beat to God's heart and understood the significance of that mount for the people of God to finally take what belonged to them. Yes, I'm talking about David.
What was the first thing David did as soon as he was crowned?
That's right! He took the mount!
That's a man after God's heart.
He had a clear vision of what God wanted to do. And soon you will too!
The king and his men marched to Jerusalem to attack the Jebusites, who lived there. The Jebusites said to David, "You will not get in here; even the blind and the lame can ward you off." They thought, "David cannot get in here." Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion-which is the City of David.
2 Samuel 5:6-7 NIVThis is the fortress where David lived and he called it "the City of David." Today is known as Israel's capital city. The name Jerusalem grew significance over the centuries.
This mount was a strategic point where he established his kingdom and was key in David's emergence in Israel's history.
This is what marked David's kingdom. Zion gave sense to everything else.
The term Zion had a new connotation coming from the mouth of David, and its reach goes beyond time, thoughts and human reality. Zion encompasses heaven, God's purpose in Jesus and his everlasting kingdom.
For the Lord has chosen Zion, he has desired it for his dwelling, saying, "This is my resting place for ever and ever; here I will sit enthroned, for I have desired it.
Psalm 132:13-14 NIV
