[Disclaimer: Before we dive in the story, I want to tell you all that in the beginning this story might seem that it is way too dark but I assure it is not. Yes, their past is dark but the story is not. And you know people have dark pasts, don’t they? My characters have too but their past doesn’t define them. What they decide to do of their present does.

I would highly recommend this story if you struggle with self doubt and you tend to belittle yourself.

And please do not spread hate on my characters. I love them and I want you to love (at least) respect them as well.]

01 | get away

ANIKA FELT THE fear creep over her skin as she was once again back inside the dark, dimly lit room. She could feel her pulse rate increasing, her heart racing in her chest. Sweat tickled the side of her face as her own screams echoed in her ears.

She had ran away, hadn’t she? So then why was she back here?

“NOOOOOOOO!” It was her voice screaming somewhere in distance.

Anika’s eyes snapped open and she was blinded by the bright sunlight in the room. It was safe to say that Anika hadn’t seen sunlight in what she supposed were months. She squinted her eyes and ran a palm down her face, wiping away the sweat. Her breaths were short as she struggled to breathe properly. And the position she was in wasn’t the most comfortable so Anika tried to move to her side but a wince left her lips as it pained to move.

Two heads whipped in her direction and Anika’s own head shot up. She realized she wasn’t alone in the room.

Despite the weakness that plagued her body, Anika was off the bed in a second because the instinct to survival was greater than any pain. She grabbed a glass and thinking quick Anika smashed it against the wall. She could barely hold herself together but she held the shard of glass as a makeshift weapon.

I won’t let them hurt me again, she thought. They can’t hurt me again. They have done enough.

Her hands shook but she kept her face neutral even though she knew her body would pass out any moment. “Don’t any of you dare come near or else I’ll hurt you.”

As she stepped back, the small shard of glass–which had scattered on the floor after Anika smashed it–dug into her skin but it did nothing to faze Anika. In the past few months, her body had been become immune to the pain it was subjected to.

Anika’s bottom lip trembled as anxiety crawled in. But Anika had had enough though. She had ran away and she wouldn’t let two people in stupid white coats take away that freedom. She would rather die than do in that hell hole again.

“We won’t–” the blonde woman vegan but Anika held up the shard of glass again.

“I am not kidding when I say I’ll hurt you.” Anika sneered. “Get away from me in this instant or–”

But before Anika could complete her sentence, a man walked in with a devastated look on his face. He had short inky hair and a tattoo over his right arm. When his head shot up, her eyes met his amber brown ones. There was familiar about him that Anika tried to recall but had no recollection of. Staring into those eyes, Anika was transported to a world where everything played on such a fast pace that Anika struggled to keep up. She closed her eyes and clutched her head. The rewinding of memories had caused her head to throb painfully. She stumbled back and wondered what was about this man that caused her head to throb?

She knew he wasn’t one of those man in that dark room because he looked too soft to be one of them.

The developing headache caused her knees to buckle and for a few moments she just sat there, panting. She tried to think why the man seemed familiar but her brain didn’t seem to cooperate. And slowly, everything was starting to blur itself; dark spots were beginning to cloud her vision. Anika didn’t know if it was her body shutting the system down or the liquid that was being infected into her body by the blonde.

She could feel her body being moved and tucked into the bed. A comforter was pulled over her. Some sort of pointed object was put in her wrist and even though it pained, Anika couldn’t bring herself to wince.

There were hushed whispers. She heard three of them whispering back and forth. One of them was whispering harshly to the other two. Anika tried to strain her ears to hear what they were whispering but her mind was not making sense of a single word. It was useless.

“Let her sleep peacefully,” one of them said and there were sounds of footsteps. The door shut and the footsteps faded.

But little did any of them know that Anika Maheshwari had too many nightmares to deal with to have a peaceful sleep.

yes, i know this is extremely short but the story is just getting started. with time, you will see that the updates become longer because I like to do it that way. set up the plot with short updates and elongate them along the way.

so if you like it, please vote and comment ;)
