I was having a good sound sleep for the first in a while. When the muffled sound of someone speaking woke me up. I sat up and noticed that AJ was wide awake as well.
'That's weird.' I thought. 'The sounds are coming from my backpack. Wait, my walkie talkie.'
I ran over and grabbed it from my pack. I heard two voices.
A girl voice said, "Anybody out there?"
A boy's voice said, "What makes you think that there are others out there?"
The girl said, "Because there has to be."
"Alright, we better keep moving."
I was surprised. I clicked the button and said, "Hello? Who's there? Over."
The girl said excited, "I told you we weren't alone. I'm Easter and the Debby downer is Cody. Over."
I said, "I'm Clementine." AJ nudged me. "Go on."
AJ said, "Hi, I'm AJ. It's nice to meet you Easter and Cody. Over."
They said, "Hi AJ, nice to meet you too."
They seem like nice people, but I have learned many times that seeming and being are two different things.
Cody yelled, "RUN!"
Easter, well I think she growled, "Fudge."
They went silent for 20 minutes. We were starting to get worried. Finally, Easter said, "Man, that was close."
Cody said, "Yeah, it was."
Easter asked, "Clem? AJ? You still there. Over."
I said, "Yes. Over."
Easter sigh relived, "I'm glade y'all are okay."
Cody said laughing, "Y'all? Really?"
Easter replied sassily, "Sorry. But I am a country girl."
"I know but, your country doesn't always show."
Come to think of it she did have a slight accent.
Easter asked, "So Clem how old are you? We're 18. Over."
I answered, "I'm 17. Over."
Easter said strangled, "Cody help!"
Cody yelped, "Easter!"
There was a loud crash. Then silence.
It was going on 30 minutes. We were getting worried again. Finally, we heard heavy breathing, then Easter gave a muffled scream.
Cody asked, "How did you get a stick run clear through your leg?"
Easter answered agitated, "I fell. I tripped and fell. Just like that walker."
" You pushed that walker onto a broken sign post."
Easter snapped back but, somehow didn't raise her voice, "Shut up! Now!"
Cody had started to say something else but thought better of it.
'That's probably a good thing.' I thought.
I asked hoping they could hear me, "Where are you? Over."
Cody answered, "We are near some old blown up train station. Over."
I said, "Okay. I'll come and get you."
AJ said, "I'm coming too."
I said, "Sorry AJ, but it's too risky." 'I can't lose you too.'
