Keith POV

I can’t stand him! Can he not take the obvious hint that I don’t want a partner or literally anyone to talk to? I already told him to fuck off every time we spoke. What happened to lance; the thick glasses, happy-go-lucky guy while I was gone? Why has he been replaced with some tackily annoying boy?

I glared a hole through his cocky head, unimpressed by his shit-eating grin.

Coach Coran finished writing down the pairs before he added the rest of his instructions, “One member from every group please come up and sign yours and your partner’s name by the topic you want to cover, As well as grabbing a rubric.”

I immediately got up trying to avoid anything that weirdo could possibly say to me. I scanned the list until I came across the Cuban Revolution of 1953.

I wrote mine and lance’s initials by the assignment and trudged back to my seat after grabbing a rubric.

I plopped down and turned to the tan boy gathering as much civility as I could muster, “So when should we start our research? The assignment is due Friday so I think we should start today after school personally.”

He seemed thoughtful, something I didn’t even expect he could be, nodded his head before pulling out his phone.

He texted someone before slipping it back in his pocket, giving me a cheeky thumbs up and I shook my head at his childishness.

3rd Person

“Why did you choose me?” lance cocked an eyebrow at the emo boy next to him. Keith seemed to be analyzing lance with an interrogating glint in his violet eyes.

Lance honestly couldn’t help but give a small smirk at the secret information he held.

“Because, you aren’t a bad person and you are always alone.”, lance answered giving Keith the ‘I know that you lie to everyone’ look.

Keith's face immediately expressed offense and he snapped at lance’s reply with a thick coat of harsh venom on his tongue and words, “You don’t know who I am and you have no right to assume my character either. We are here to get an assignment done and nothing more.”

The bell rung simultaneously to the end of Keith’s reply, to which the Asian boy grabbed his stuff and stomped out the door to lunch.

Lance’s eyes lingered on Keith’s retreating form before he gathered his things as well heading the same way Keith did.

He waited his eternity in line before finally sitting at his friend’s table. Hunk, Shay, Pidge, Allura, and some of his other acquaintances were seated eating whatever they had for lunch.

Lance plopped down on the bench next to Allura and sighed.

“Are you alright lance?”, Allura inquired using the hand that wasn’t intertwined with pidge’s to place it on lance’s shoulder in a comforting manner.

“How do you become friends with someone that is a complete lone wolf and will rip your head off any time you try to speak to them?”, Lance scanned Allura's eyes for a genuine answer before Pidge piped up.

“Awwe, is lance trying to be lovey dovey with Keith? ~”, she slurred with a teasing voice.

“What- No. I just- I just feel he needs to open up more! And how did you know it was Keith?”, lance sputtered and tried to find the correct wording to use.

“Lancey, I have eyes in the back of my head. I know everything.”

“True, they really do find out about everything.”, Allura added in.

Lance shivered at the fact that Pidge was indeed maybe some gremlin that was crawling through air vents spying on the whole school.

“First, I am not a gremlin nor do I climb through air ducts.” , lance’s eyes widen when he realized he accidently thought out loud, “and I am literally in the class with you dude. To which I am also offended
that you didn’t choose to partner with me. Jeez, hoes these days aren’t loyal right hunk?”

Lance felt like throwing himself into the void as hunk nodded in playful agreement and shay chuckled at their antics.

How could he forget he had the class with Pidge? Had lance really been too focused on Keith that he didn’t remember them?

“By the way, your partner looked ready to chop your head off before lunch. What did you say to him?”, Pidge asked with an intrigued yet confused expression. They did not want to imagine the kind of dumb
thing lance could’ve said to the Korean boy.

Lance leaned in closer to Pidge slightly wrapping himself around Allura’s back in a weird way. Allura didn’t mind, she just continued sipping her milkshake.

Lance told the Italian girl about how Keith was red and about the confusion, along with the kitten then told her what he said to Keith last period. They shook their head and scolded lance for saying something he had no place saying, whether he was right or not. Keith was a lone wolf and a defensive person for a reason, and telling someone who they are without knowing them well was practically asking for an argument.

Lance finally sat up straight rubbing his back from the awkward position he had been in. He leaned over the table with his head cradled in his slender hands, a frown decorating his face.

He glanced over at the
cafeteria windows spotting Keith sitting on one of the picnic benches listening to music on his phone. He looked so lonely in lance’s eyes, but he had to agree with pidge’s words.

The Bell sounded off signifying that lunch was over. Lance hauled his backpack to his shoulder and threw his tray away on the way out.

-Time Skip-

Lance met up with Keith in the study area by the windows of the second story library after the last bell sounded.

Lance dropped his bag on the opposite side of the wooden table from Keith. He pulled out the cushioned chair and sat down before addressing Keith, “hey dude, look I shouldn’t have
said what I did earlier. Bad call on my part. So truce?”

Keith stared back in bewilderment that had once stemmed from an annoyed expression. He didn’t expect the resident dumbass to actually apologize to him, but he shrugged internally. ‘I guess it one step closer to being civilized’

Keith finally responded, “Fine. Truce. Now can we get started on this assignment? I need to go home before 7.”

“Sure thing bud, I also need to leave early too. I have my nieces and nephews to watch tonight.”, lance said with a soft smile at the mention of his extended family.

Keith got up and grabbed some books from the history section before setting them down on the table. He sat back down before grabbing his pencil and a book from the pile and sifting through its index.

Lance grabbed his own book, “so what are we going to be writing about mullet?”

Keith scoffed, “one, don’t call me that and two, I picked the Cuban Revolution of 1953.”

“Well that’s funny.”, lance seemed amused with Keith’s choice in topic.

“I don’t see anything funny with an armed revolt against the Cuban government.”

“Whatever, I was just about to say it was funny because I’m from Cuba.”, lance added in with a sense of pride washing over his features.

“Oh ok. Well that’s interesting.” Keith seemed unfazed by the Cuban boy’s comment.

“So, where are you from keithy boy?”

“Stop making up nicknames, and I’m a Texas local.”, Keith replied turning a page in the book and
scribbling down some information.

“I thought you were born in a Spencer's.”, lance muttered under his breath as he drew some geometric figures next to his notes.

“What?”, Keith inquired not hearing lance clearly the first time.

“I said what is your family like?”, lance saved himself last moment only to be met with a tense looking Keith.

He looked uncomfortable to say the least. Lance’s eyebrows raised in worried curiosity. Keith
finally seemed to gather his thoughts before continuing the conversation casually,

“Uh I live with my brother. How about you?”

Lance would’ve asked more about the situation but he decided against it. He didn’t want to make Keith think he was prying too much and make the atmosphere around them worse.

Lance lit up brightly as his lips were tugged in a grin. He told Keith about his huge family and about Cuba.

He described the country and the beach. Lance was staring outside of the library window while droplets of water lightly hit the glass surface.

He told Keith about his love of water and felt nostalgia with a sense of hidden pain drip into his words. Without realizing it he was actually babbling aimlessly and Keith just decided to let him keep going.

He didn’t want to ruin lance’s obvious adoration for his home and he couldn’t help but feel the faintest tug at the corners of his mouth. His smile was small and hidden.

‘Maybe he isn’t that annoying.’
