Chapter 1

~Now~

(Ace POV)

I stood in front of the grave while the humans around me continued on throwing dirt on the rusty brown casket. The workers at the cemetery had shooed everyone after the funeral was over, but I still wanted to pay my respects to the human male I have been protecting for the last eighty-six years.

It really wouldn't have mattered if I stayed here or not since I wasn't visible to any humans around me nor could I interact with any of them.

I took of the deep ocean blue colored sapphire necklace that I have been wearing for the last eighty-six years and placed it on the casket, returning the birthstone to its original owner.

Every angel is required to wear the birthstone of the person they are protecting so they could easily find them across the Earth. It helps us visit the Earth and allows us to walk beside the humans without them realizing.

As I took of the birthstone and placed it on the casket, I was instantly transported back to the Heavens since I could not stay on Earth without it.

I entered through the wide, golden gates of the Heavens and was greeted by Ajax, the angel of knowledge and my best friend. Ajax has short platinum blond hair with baby blue eyes, strong, muscular built and a handsome face. All the angel ladies (and some men) would fall head over heels just at the sight of him.

" I was wondering when you were going to get rid of that old piece of stone." Ajax said walking towards me with a smirk plastered on his face.

"Not funny Ajax. Ben was a nice man, he had a wife and children who are probably missing him dearly."

"Sooooo, are you going over to the temple to receive the new stone? Can I come?! Pretty pretty please......"

Yep! This is the all mighty angel of knowledge begging to accompany me to the temple to pick up my new birthstone.

"Look I won't even make a peep! I would just stand there at the door if you want and look all cold and soulless just like angel Caellum." He said while trying to put on a cold, expressionless face and failing miserably. Angel Caellum is the angel of war, the leader of the Heavens and the oldest angel alive.

I laughed at his weird antics and nodded my head, allowing him to accompany me to the temple.

Ajax kept on babbling as we made our way through the spacious streets of the Heavens to the Temple of Guardians.

The Heavens look pretty much how humans imagine it to be. Mostly everything is white with specks of silver and gold. White one-story houses with silver roofs and beautiful gardens are aligned along the marble streets.

Angels were walking on the streets. Chatting with each other and enjoying their day. As we walked by, they greeted us with large smiles. Returning their greetings, we continued on our way to the temple.

***

I was standing in front of the temple with Ajax on my right. For the first time since returning Ben's birthstone, I was feeling these bundle of nerves inside of me.

What if it was a criminal? I don't want to protect a criminal! Would I be allowed to ignore them if they "accidentally" got hit by a truck? Of course not! Since I didn't protect them and actually killed them, I would be spending the rest of eternity in a cell as my punishment! For what! Not protecting a criminal! This is bad. I should probably go and talk to angel Caellum, maybe I can convince him to give me some time off.

"Dude, calm down! I can see the wheels turning in your head from a mile away."

I looked over to Ajax. He was standing there with crossed arms and a raised eyebrow staring at me intently.
