My poor mother begged for a sheep but raised a wolf. -Michelle K.
________
Have you ever loved someone, even though you knew they couldn't love you back the same way?
Sometimes that's how I felt with my parents. They put on a good show in front of everyone, but their caring faces were just masks. They bubble-wrapped me solely for the sake of protecting their image, not for protecting my well-being. What would it say about them if they let harm come to their only daughter?
All I was ever expected to do was sit and look pretty. The problem was, I wasn't a porcelain doll. I was a girl, who had feelings, thoughts, and ideas. A girl who most days just wanted to be heard. Although, I had learned long ago to forgo the thought of someone listening to anything I had to say.
If I were a doll I was broken, shattered into a million pieces.
It was hard to believe this was my life. Daily wondering what was my purpose other than to multiply or attract the attention of every dimwitted male that came before my parents to ask for my hand. Thankfully, I was still too young for them to accept anyone. The clock was ticking, though, as they had decided the day I turned twenty-one would be the day a male would be chosen. I personally believed this was because they knew this was the age I would find my mate.
Anger flared inside of me at the thought of them coming between my mate and me, whoever he was.
I tried to push it aside as this was not the time to be thinking of things like that. I could not show any emotion in front of my parents or their subordinates. I decided I should tune into their conversation in case my father was to question me after, as he had done many times before.
"Sir, the western side of that territory is completely unguarded. We need to ensure they have the resources to staff and upgrade it," Henry, one of my father's men said.
I had missed whichever pack he was speaking of, but it must have not been one of the stronger packs. Many of the stronger packs were made up of rich alphas who had risen their status in the wrong way. It infuriated me, but I was glad my father helped the lesser packs, the underdogs who played by the rules.
"I understand, tell Alpha Johnson we will supply him with a certain amount of materials if he can supply the manpower," my father ordered and Henry nodded before heading out to make the phone call. My father then turned to another man, whose name I didn't know.
"Haney Middleton, what do you have for me on your branch of packs?" he asked, motioning for him to lay out all his information.
"Well, Alpha Conrí-"
I began to tune out again, becoming rather bored with all the pack talk.
"Iridessa," my father called, bringing me out of my thoughts.
"Father?" I replied back, sitting up straighter and making eye contact with him.
"You are dismissed, go find Alexander and work on training," he ordered and I bowed my head before leaving the room.
I breathed out a sigh of relief as I exited the room, grateful to be somewhere else. I made my way down the long corridor to my room the change.
'I have to change, then I will be down,' I mind-linked him, as I was sure my father had told him to be expecting me.
