Prologue:

Liam's POV:

One of my first memories was when I was almost 6 years old. I went to the hospital for my weekly check-up. I only have one functioning kidney, only I didn't know that back then. I walked into the waiting room and ran over to the toys. I was friendly with the other children. I knew a few of their names. I remember my name being called and my mum took my hand and we walked into a room. I had a different doctor than usual. He took a few tests to make sure that I was good and healthy. The doctor gave me a thumbs up and a smelly sticker. I squealed with excitement.

"Thank you mister," I said and my mum and I walked out, back to the waiting room. My mom had to sign a few forms, so she sent me to go play with the other children. I saw a big, shiney, red toy truck, resting on the ground. I ran to grab it, but someone elses hands reached it before me. A little girl with no hair, held the truck in her arms. I tried to grab it from her.

"I saw it first!" I protested.

"Well, I got it first!" The girl shot back.

"I saw it first so give it to me," I demanded.

"Why don't we share it?" she asked.

"Okay," I agreed. We took turns driving the little truck around with our hands. We made noises and pretended to be a car horn.

"Honk honk!" I said as I played with the truck. The girl giggled and made honking noises as well.

      "Whats your name?" I asked.

       "I'm Layan," the girl said.

       "I'm Liam," I introduced myself.

"Why are you here?" I asked.

"I have Lu-Leuk-Leukemia," Layan said as she struggled to pronounce the word.

          "What's that?" I quetsioned.

          "I don't know." she whispered.

"Does it hurt?" she nodded and said,

"Sometimes I hurt, but I don't know why. And sometimes I barf icky stuff. And I have no hair," Layan said with wide, scared eyes. I knew that whatever she was diagnosed with, frightened her. I put the truck down and gave her a hug.

"I'm sorry Layan," I said as she hugged me back. She smiled at me and her green eyes glistened.

"What do you have?" she asked.

I thought for a little bit, then frowned and pointed to my belly. I just knew that there was something wrong inside of me.

"I don't know. Let me ask Mum," I said and I stood up to ask my mum.

"Mum," I said as I pulled at her shirt.

"One second dear," she said and she finished signing papers and bent down to talk to me.

        "Whats up, Liam?" Mum asked.

"I was just wondering what is wrong with me?" I said and I pulled up my shirt and rubbed my stomach.

"Is it my tummy?" I asked. My mum's eyes started to tear up.

"Nothing is wrong with you, dear. You are a perfect little boy. You only have a little kidney problem. You don't need to worry, but why where you asking?" she said.

"My new friend wanted to know," I said as I pulled her over to Layan. A woman stood by her side, talking to her.

"Hi Layan. This is my mum," I said. Layan turned her attention to me.

"Liam! This is my mum!" she said, pointing to the woman next to her.

"Layan, I have something wrong with my kidey," I told her.

"Kidney," Mum corrected. And then Layan's Mum and my Mum introduced themselves to each other. Layan and I continued to play with the red truck, while our mothers chatted. We left after a while, I grabbed my mum's hand once more as we exited the hospital. I don't know what our parents talked about, but within weeks, Layan and I where inseparable, we were best friends.
