It took Claire almost the whole half hour the baby had, to pull herself together and accept the circumstances. Thinking it over and over in her head, she realized that it could be much worse. A c-section wasn't that bad, she'd just rather be without the opening of her stomach, but that was something she would have to deal with. When the half hour was up, the doctor entered the room again. Karen was about to take Maisie outside like earlier but the doctor stopped them, signaling that there was no need. They both sat down again, Maisie on Karen's lab in the chair. Owen noticed how Maisie had grown incredible comfortable with Karen during their little time in the hospital. Not that it took long for the girl to get comfortable with Claire and himself. Hell, she basically trusted them from the minute she met them. Almost.
The doctor walked up to the end of Claire's bed and looked at her papers. He smiled over at Karen and Maisie to acknowledge their presence, before he turned his attention to Claire and Owen. His smile grew when his eyes landed on Claire's. "Ms. Dearing" He said, letting her papers go before putting his hands behind his back. "I have gotten it confirmed that I can give you a drug that will hopefully get the whole process started. If it works within the next couple of hours, you won't need a c-section.
Claire's face broke into a smile and so did the rest of the faces in the room. Another tear went down Claire's cheek but this time it was for an entirely different reason. "Thank you doctor" She said, nodding slightly at him. "No need Claire" He said, smiling over at Owen before leaving the room. "Your bad luck might have run out already then" Owen mumbled against her lips while he kissed her over and over again.
The doctor came back 10 minutes later with the drug he had mentioned. Telling Karen that it would probably be for the best if she took Maisie outside for this. Karen did exactly that, taking the opportunity to ask more into Maisie. It took long before the doctor left and Karen was starting to get nervous, but sucked it up to make sure Maisie stayed calm. The girl had a lot of questions about the baby and Claire and what was going to happen. If everything was alright and so on. Karen could tell that the girl was extremely nervous but was trying her best to look calm.
"It's okay to be scared Maisie" Karen said as she calmly put a comforting arm around the girl's shoulders. She leaned her head against Karen and sighed. "I know...mom and dad say that a lot" She said, close to a whisper. "They're right, you know" Karen said as she rubbed the girl's shoulder a couple times. "I know...But I want to look strong, like I don't need their help all the time...especially now that there's going to be a baby. I don't want to be in the way" Maisie confessed, her voice getting lower and more vulnerable by the second. Karen didn't know how she felt. In some way, her heart was exploding with something good that she couldn't quite place. It was amazing how Maisie was brave enough to just spill out her feelings like that. Even more when it was to someone she barely knew. On the other side though, her heart was shattered to pieces, after hearing how this poor little girl felt. Karen hadn't been caught up on everything that had happened from the island to the mansion to them living in a van. Hell, she probably only knew 10% of what happened at the first incident, at the park. What she did know though, was that this girl shouldn't feel this way. She quickly made it her mission, to help Maisie overcome this fear she had of needing help.
Half an hour later, the door opened and out came Owen, telling them they could come back inside. Following Owen into the room, they found Claire still in her bed not looking any different and the doctor by the end of her bed, scribbling down something on her papers. "It will take 30-120 minutes to work, if it will that is. There's no guarantee but in most cases, it does work. Just hope for the best, okay guys!" the doctor said before leaving them all alone. "What did they do?" Karen asked quickly, wanting to know what happened in there and why it took so long. "Not much. He just did a regular check and then gave me the drug" Claire told her sister. "Why did it take so long then?" Karen was quick to ask. "He had to keep an eye on the drug or something" Claire said, sounding more tired than ever, obviously not having been listening to the whole thing. Karen looked to Owen, hoping he could fill her in a bit more. He just shrugged and said. "What she said" Making both him and Claire chuckle. "You two" Karen said defeated, making her way over to the second bed.
